Well I got the first piece to my first build, that being the engine. I somehow managed to pick up a Briggs and Stratton 8hp for only $60.(Model:190402 Type:2815-01 Code:85100710)

I got the thing home and had some time to check it out over the weekend, gutted it and found nothing devastating. I will need to replace the crankcase gasket and the throttle spring, but the thing that has really thrown me for a loop is its lack of fuel lines. Obviously these are easily replaced but I cannot seem to find anything on the internet that clearly lays out how its fuel system works, I know my trimmer keeps its fuel filter inside of the fuel tank but some engines will just put it inline along with the fuel lines. Also the trimmer will use a primer but my lawnmower does not, and I cant find a definitive answer on whether mine B&S 8hp is supposed to have one or not... As this is my first real experience with engines of this kind I have no educated guesses.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Every time I looked it kept asking me if I wanted to buy the repair manual, you just made my life a **** of a lot easier and saved me $35! I'll post more pictures once finals are over and I can start the engine overhaul.

No problem. You just go to their website, put in your engine numbers and it gives you a manual to download.

I know that it is possible to buy parts online, but is it common to have local shops sell small engine parts?(i.e. Fuel filters, Crankcase gaskets, fuel line, throttle springs) It would be much more convenient and quicker to be able to browse through parts rather than order them and wait for shipping, what sort of shops should I be looking for?

Lawn and garden outfits. ...plus specific small engine repair shops....

Be prepared to pay double for that convience and saving less than a week to have parts in hand.....

Then figure in gas and commute time.....

I'll stick with online myself. ...unless it's an emergency or I am just really in a hurry.....

On second thought I'll just put in the order online tonight, maybe I can get them in before the weekend.

Been real busy with work recently. Ended up ordering all the parts for the B&S but was sent the wrong gasket, I haven't had much time so I never got around to correcting it. Then the other day I came across a Honda lawn tractor with a big FREE sign on it. I quickly got the family van and rushed over to get it, however the cops didn't like my rush and ended up delaying me but no ticket

It doesnt have a deck so the only option is to make this thing a kart of sorts. It's not even close to running shape though so we will have to see what what kind of work its going to take

It was 12:30 AM because I was getting back from working on the farm (Hour drive) so I tore the free sign off and pushed it in the yard to look like it was still in use by the people so I could get the van. then I loaded the **** thing with the help of only one friend.
Heavy? yes. Worth it? **** yes.

I am having trouble with stripping screws, I drilled a few of them out but some just break my bits. Does anyone have a good technique for removing stripped screws?

Haven't had too much time recently so here are just some pictures without much explanation. Long story short the engine is out and will turn over with some force, in real rough shape though. I have run into some issues but I do not currently have enough time to go into detail. I'll try and put something more detailed up after I do some work this weekend since I only get a few hours a week to put towards the kart.

Why is it that things always seem to nest in engine recoils??

I've hit a stand still on today... I need to pull off all the pulleys on the front of this engine but I broke the heads off the screws I believe are holding everything together (First Picture) I have no idea how to correct this because drilling them out is not working.

Secondly I was looking at the cams and I allowed a good bit of dirt to get in (Second picture) how would I go about properly cleaning that out?

The broken screws take priority and if anyone has any advice it would be appreciated! maybe I can still get something done on it today.

I could be wrong but, I think those screws only hold the ring gear onto the flywheel; removing the big nut in the centre of the flywheel will free up the flywheel...

If you have one, an air powered degreaser gun. If not, a spray can of degreaser & an air blower...

Right ok first off keep ya cool lol. The flywheel removal first, if you do not have a puller undo the flywheel nut (it might be a left hand thread). Wind the nut to the end of the thread then take a soft hammer (not a steel one) or use a block of wood on the nut lift the engine a inch off the floor lifting it by the edge of the flywheel then hit the flywheel nut the weight of the engine should release the flywheel. Get some easing oil on the studs let it soak drill the center out of the stud then using a stud extractor and a little heat from a blow torch they might come out if not take the flywheel to your local engineer it will not brake the bank a repair like that hope this helps in some way!!
