Actually it opened itself up on a dusty desert road while going 40 mph.
so, this is an operating room by comparison.
after repairs/mods have been made, l’ll pull the engine out, clean everything and reassemble this scrap pile.
Understood, Just pulling yer leg :sifone:

You ought to get Thepartsguy to fix that engine right for you.
The bolts hogged out the thread openings. the whole cover must of been shaking while running... Not enough endplay or a horrible shake I don’t even have a clue.. What I can conclude is that things are sure buggered Edit: Geeeeeeesh that middle bolt doesn’t thread into the block it looks like? Or is that a dowl pin hole? Either way I don’t know how I would fix it. drill and tap the threads AND cover and hope it stays true or helicoil? Bigger dowl pin and drilled dowl hole in the cover? 68768DFB-B10B-4BB8-BB57-EBAAFE3F5304.png

What is proper end play? 0.010” on a 196 - 212 clone engines?

I just usually give it a tug and say it’ll be fine. I only used washers on the 420.

Denny, you know this is the only track I listen to. It’s a banger. I have 3 CDs of only this song. Always on repeat.

So yer sayin I'm not capable of fixing it "right"?
There is the right way, the wrong way and then there is the hack way. :ROFLMAO:

Its a F****n mess anyway ya look at it but it can be fixed.
I never liked the way the CVT plate bolts to that side cover. 4 bolts to the cover and a few bolts to the crankcase. All the torque and forces of the chain yanking on that seems like trouble to me. I have a hack plan to fix that.

That’s good’ol China for you... The crankcase cover threads are weak at best.. Your tightening the sidecover jackshaft plate bolts and you just ****** know the bolts are not tight enough to keep the plate on.. tighten’em anymore though and the 3 cent threads strip right out... We impact the massive bridge iron bolts off AND back on our kohlers.. But the bolts on our kohlers are so big it doesn’t matter the impact will not strip them. Id be worried about that sidecover staying on with those threads on your block... There’s nothing to grab with it being China metal in the first place. Removing more of the threads and slightly wollaring out the holes Is just going to lead to even more problems that keep you fixing more then riding...

Yeah that purdy much covers it.
Fortunately the wallowed out threads are only damaged about 2 threads deep. Cleaned 'em up with a tap and the studs go in just fine. Hopefully it will be ok.
I drilled out the dowell pin hole to .375 and sacrificed a grade 8 bolt and made a new pin press fit even!

I live 5 minutes from a massive dirt oval and seen Briggs 5hp that we’re good engines thrown into the garbage... the intake bolts threads strip out.. No matter what they did they couldn’t keep carburetors on them so they would just pull there parts and chuck’em...

Too late, this what a hack repair/modification/improvement will look like:

Its not finished, the two blocks underneath are 5/8 x 1 x15 bar stock welded to the engine cradle and will get bolted to the 3/8 plate pictured. The whole thing moves as an assembly for chain adjusting.
So wadda ya think? Will it work?

IIUC the TAV will now be supported by its own mount?
...& NOT just hangin' off of the side of the engine?

I like it :cheers2:
...& looks pretty beefy!
