Sheered some of the bolt heads? And some backed out? Check the threads for the side case bolts. If there stripped they will give you nothing but trouble... If there not stripped then you don’t need to lock the bolts down by sticking a small piece of copper wire/flux wire into the hole and threading the bolt in. The wire sticks out and bends and crushes flat under the bolt head. That trick is only for stripped threads..

The bolt(s) broke off flush with the crankcase. i see one for sure, there could be more.
The cover is standing out 1/2 inch all the way around. So my guess is some came loose and the remaining broke off. The threads appear ok, but l’ll know more when it gets disassembled. Thinkin studs and old school safety wire, in conjunction to some hot sauce.

Doesn’t appear the engine suffered any serious damage. A good cleaning, replace the cover and all should be good. I’m working on a plan to attach the CVT plate to the engine mounts. That would relieve the stress applied to the crankcase cover, from the chain yanking on it.

Actually it opened itself up on a dusty desert road while going 40 mph.
so, this is an operating room by comparison.
after repairs/mods have been made, l’ll pull the engine out, clean everything and reassemble this scrap pile.
