Your muffler would have holes in it and it would be noisy. And blow exhaust every which way.

Give it a go.
Preferably, drill them all around the current exit hole; just some satellite holes around it.
If you're feeling adventurous after that, consider slicing the muffler open around the seam--I would love to see the inner chamber(s) and baffles.

I tried it once. I kept hearing metal shaving rattling inside that I couldn't get out. I just didn't want to put it on and have them fall down an open exhaust valve.
