The Size of the tire is insignificant, what matters is the reduction from the clutch. A 20" tire with a 15" sprocket is the identical reduction to a 12" tire with a 9" sprocket.

Now, the real problem is keeping that much chain on the sprocket, which is why they may have used the jackshaft arrangement.

The arrangement of wheels in this design is called a Tadpole Quad (trike if the rear wheel was only one). I completed a tadpole quad a year ago, and high speeds is something only for the fearless. The design is more streamlined, compact, and light, but you do loose quite a bit of the box or rectangle stability. Also, you will need to work the front suspension carefully to make it stable above 20MPH, so be sure to use both Kingpin inclination and caster.

I read somewhere that to make an effective reverse trike-styled vehicle, you need to have about 65-70% of the entire vehicle's weight on the front wheels for stability. Those little Harley-Davidson TriHawks were sure stable little road rockets .....

Well cart is on hold until my finger reattaches itself.
I almost sliced the tip of my left middle finger off after slipping and catching the nail side on a sharp edge of the frame.
Needless to say it bled more than Niagara falls and hurt like i cut my arm off.
My finger nail will most likely have to be removed for the part from the cut to the cuticle will not grow properly.

That sucks about the finger! Almost lost one of mine on my bandsaw. Gloves always a must.

As for the kart, I think that the 2x1/8 is going to be really heavy for the frame. Unless its aluminum. You could use 1" by 1/8 and be just as good as long as the rear is triangulated someway. In the sketch i did with the pivoting rear, you don't need it to pivot but if you flip that bottom frame gusset and lower it a bit you will get more support on the center of the frame. On your original sketch you will be fine with the 2"x1/8" but it will most likely be really heavy and you might still have some flex with the rear lower gusset welded right behind the uper part of the riders back. Before welding up the frame completely, tack everything really good with it mounted lower on the frame and then try putting pressure on it, then take it off and tack it higher to see if there is any difference.

Remember not to completely weld all the seams until the frame is completly built preassembled. Once you start welding, everything will shrink when the welds cool so if its not on a jig or mounted to a table, it will be out of alignment once completely cooled afetr welding. Be patient when building so that you don't have to do it twice.

Just my 2 cents from my learning process.

I wasn't thinking straight when i wrote up that measurement, it's more like 1/16" but def around 2".

As for my finger I'm using it again. I drilled a hole in my nail to relieve some pressure from the bruising. Im going to the docs tomorrow to get a tetanus shot to be safe even tho it was clean steel.

I actually have a lot of it built, the front is finished, the front sits literally 1" off the ground, watching out for pebbles!. Just don't get too excited, I mean this thing is a junker by all means.

I need to find bearings that I can press into a sleeve or a sleeve able to carry 1-15/16" OD bearings.

When it comes to finding every imaginal Pipe or tubing size (including rod as well), you got to go to Mcmaster.com. They also have just about every bearing imaginable as well.

Great sight, and the prices are not too bad either.

Im hardcore!!!
Lol, nah it's not that bad. Hell, it didn't bother me, it was kind of stress relieving. I work at a hardware store so I just grab a #60 drill bit and took a bathroom break and started drilling into my nail, took about 5 minutes.

Do they require you to have a business account like Grainger does? Or can anyone order from their site?

Dude.........You DRILLED a hole in your nail on purpose to realeive pressure? I'd never have the balls to do that!

*Cough...*

I certainly hope the drill bit didn't go back on the shelf...Not that I care. :arf:

That's what most do. Burn the nail right through. Ahhh that's gross. My knee hurt's, I smashed it on the gym floor today. Time to break out a 1/2" drill bit and drill a hole.

yeah, it's kind of pointless to have a nice header if you're just going to weld a muffler on the end.. :p
