Crankshaft size

how can i find the size of my engine crankshaft
i have a 3hp Briggs and strat, i tried measuring it but it came out to a bit over 1/2 inch
so it wasnt accurate enough

If it's a standard shaft, and not tapered, ect it should be 3/4" or so.

because i wnat to buy a clutch and theres two sizes 3/4 and 5/8 i dont want to get the wrong size

if it looks like a bit over a half inch then its probebly 5/8
try measuring it starting at the 1 or 2'' line and see what it looks like because the little end on the tape measure slitly moves a bit

I know for a fact the 2HP's are 5/8". I have two. 3HP should be 3/4", but measure the diameter of the tip of the crankshaft to make sure.

Mine was about $100. Can get them much cheaper.
I've seen them for $20 on up.
Price is commensurate with accuracy/quality.

Harbor freight 1/4" drive - $20
3/8" Drive - $25
1/2" Drive - $30

Gotta love that store.

Not very accurate. But if it works for you, then it's fine.
I need accuracies around .005. Anything less accurate than that would cause pistons to seize.

The $20 digital tool sale ones are more than accurate enough for cart building. Everybody should las have feller gauges in their tool box.

every one should have a feeler gauge in there tool box
thats a cheap must have

so make sure if your working on engines atleast have a calipar and a feeler gauge
