Sheet metal. Tin. The metal work that the pullstart is bolted to, and all parts connected. The PAINTED stuff!

EDIT- The engine itself is aluminum. The stuff I'm talking about is steel. If a magnet sticks to it, take it off!
the magnet is not the wheel is called a flywheel right??

Is this a joke....????

OK trek, A motor like this has fins all over, they help it cool it.
Here is some sheet metal parts on a similar motor.
They cover parts of the motor to channel the air over it.

These are not my pics, I found them on the google search.

The fuel tank is mounted over the crank case
The heat is coming from the head and cylender

Just take off the couling and clean the fins
Also ensure the flywheel has all its fins

Also what are u calling hot

The block will always be too hot to touch
And something like a lean engine will cause exesive heat

Treklee, I have instructed you to take off the metalwork for CLEANING. Not to leave it off. And NO- leaving the gas tank off will make NO difference.

Well, that's part of it- that bit labelled "shroud". Now- depending on your engine (I have since forgotten what you have) it may have additional peces that need to come off in order for you to clean all those fins.

Well I don't know a lot about small engine but they are similar to car though
I'm more of a car engine then a small engine

I spray something I the fins so it could come off easily cause I'm using a big air compressor and its still dirty

just occurred to me that you are the one in the other thread

the engine is running too hot and it is lacking power
a long list of issues can cause either symptom

but what causes both is running lean

look in your other thread
i will put a link in there on how to clean your carb
u should also continue to clean the cooling fins as it will certainly help and will erase any fire hazard

if there is rust and dirt buildup on the fins then u can use a wire brush
if u get real keen then u can wire brush the whole block back to bare metal and paint it with special engine paint

But doesn't painting it cover the fins from cooling down???
