simple. buy the RIGHT belt! when you say "smallest THEY have" - who is THEY? if you're talking like an auto parts store, then you're shopping at the wrong place. you need to get online and buy a belt specifically for your torque converter.

Comet 30's use a 3/4" belt, Comet 40's use a 7/8" belt. there are also symetrical and asymetrical (double slanted walls and slanted/straight walls).

do some research, and maybe you'll figure out your big "Doh!". lol.

and spacing wont help the belt isn't catching on the drive clutch right because there is a 1/4 of an inch so i need a smaller belt but that is the smallest comet belt

yeah, i can have a big "Doh!" moment if you meant the distance between driver and driven pulleys was 1/4 of an inch too much. lol.

that usually happens after some wear and tear on the belt. it gets stretched out a bit and thinner from all the friction on the walls of the belt. that's when it's time to buy a new belt.

but if what's REALLY going on is you made the driven pulley too close to the driver pully and have excess slack - you're going to have to redo your setup a little bit.

is this a TAV2 setup with the retail backplate? or did you make your own jackshaft and postion it where you THOUGHT it should go? pics would help... a LOT. :)

If your driven unit/jackshaft is mounted with a backplate, (like a Tav-2) your backplate should have extra sets of bolt holes where it bolts onto the engine. Simply using a different set of bolt holes can change the required belt length...

Or If your driven unit/jackshaft bolts down to the frame instead of using a backplate:

Does your motormount have 4 slotted holes to simply adjust the engine a 1/4" further away from the jackshaft?

If not, try loosening the jackshaft and the motor mounting bolts, and push them both further apart from each other before re-tightening all the bolts.

If that wont achieve the 1/4" difference you need, you could use a Rat-tail file or Die Grinder to slightly oval shape the jackshaft mounting holes in your frame (and/or the motormounting holes), untill the engine and jackshaft will tighten down 1/4" further apart.

If you put it back together the way someone else put it together that doesnt mean THEY had it right. Double check online, don't trust someone else. Also loosening the jackshaft plate and motor mount may allow you push the motor away from the jackshaft which makes the center distance of the driver and driven further apart making the belt tighter. I got nothing else assuming you have the correct belt and assembly.
