I just purchased a used Yerfdog kart, it has a fairly new Predator 212 engine and a comet 20 torque converter. When I first got it someone had replaced the belt with a regular v-belt and would not barely drive kart. After a little research I found the correct belt, ordered parts, and replaced the belt and the Green spring in the 7" driven unit which was quite distorted. It then ran great for a few days. But now it keeps sounding like it is slipping when first starting from standing start and then keeps spitting out the green spring on the driven unit. I though that I might not have had the correct preload on the driven unit when I replaced the spring so disassembled again and followed a youtube video I found showing how to preload spring. Then found it doing the same thing again after first couple starts from standing start It once again spit out and twisted up spring on the driven unit. Anyone know what could be causing this. When it is running it pulls hard and has good speed but keeps twisting the spring after a few startups

Could you post a pic of the driven mounted on kart.
Almost sound like you are using an outboard spring on an inboard setup or vice versa.

Agreed... the spring getting spit out is a clue. When ur preloading the driven... the spring should be getting compressed.

Here are a couple of photos of the driven unit on the kart, I am new to the torque Converters on these karts how can you tell if the springs are suppose to be outboard or inboard type of springs?
Also how/where would you order the other type from I thought they went by the color coding on the spring and that is why I got a replacement Green colored spring but I would be surprised if previous owner used the wrong spring since they also tried to use a V-belt on it. Also when I preloaded unit it did compress but I guess if it had wrong spring it may of compressed wrong way (Turned pulley Clockwise to preload as shown on video.)

Thank for your assistance on this.

Honestly I don't remember the colors sigfigance.
I can see from your pic that your your driven unit is outboard. It also is missing the buttons. That spring has probably seen it last days... Just make sure you have a 30 series TC driven unit and drive spring.

It looks like a 30 series but pics can be decieving.

The biggest concern I see is the missing wear buttons allowing the ramps to spin around. Were they there at one time?

The first time it spit the spring out I noticed when putting it back together one of the rubber buttons was missing, now this second time it spit the spring out it has two of the buttons are missing. So now it only has 4 of the 6 Rubber wear buttons left. the rubber on these are real hard - not sure if it should be or if it should be somewhat flexible. I guess I'll order 6 replacement buttons and another spring and see what happens. If it still doesn't fix it maybe it is time to replace the whole thing with a new one.

The drive unit cover says it is a Comet 20 torque converter, if I replace it should I upgrade to the 30 series or will that not be a good choice for the 6.5 HP Predator 212 engine.

There are no identification #'s on these units that tells what series it is... just FYI... it looks like you have a 30 series (the #20 you see does not mean its a 20 series). The 20 and 30 series are very similar, but the 30 has a flattened inner sheave(sheave closest to engine), where as the 20 has a "V" shaped. This is an example of a 20 series... notice how both halves are angled for a "V" belt.

Yes the rubber stops are quite stiff/hard.

You will want to get a TAV2 stock replacement spring (for your setup). The factory ones are normally red in color... but the replacement appears to be green... like the one you have/had.

My guess as to the reason it defanggled itself (the spring) is because of the lack of/weakened/worn rubber, bump stop(s) to prevent it from unwinding itself. Like I had said previously... the spring is suppose to compress itself tighter... however w/out secured bump stops... it was lacking a way to create compressed tension, and the torque/spin of the driven was literally unwinding the spring. Also, ensure the end retaining C clip that holds the hub on, is properly seated, to this may be a reoccurring event if not in its proper groove.

Half-Breeder Thanks for the information, You are correct mine must be a 30 series due to it does have the flat inner side on the one side of the pulley. I just assumed the number printed on it was the series number. Also thanks for the link to vendor with the spring, it is way cheaper than the previous one with the same part number that I purchased from the other place and they took 10 days to have it shipped to me. And Yes I always make sure the Snap-rings are seated properly other wise you may be trying to find pieces that go flying off the unit. I am going to order another spring today and replacements for all the rubber buttons once they arrive I hope this is the issue and corrects it. I will post an update once I receive the parts. I wish there was a place locally to buy these instead of having to have them shipped.

Yw... yea BMI is in Versailles, Ohio... kinda long drive.

FYI... normally they get your parts to you in 3-4 days... from my/others previous issues w/ BMI... I found that Tues-Thurs are the 'better' days to order from them... not that ordering any other time is bad. Ive made over 100 orders to them in the past yr so Im pretty well versed on their reliability on unshipped parts... Ive even had back ordered parts received w/in a week of original delivery time... (not saying everyone does).

Some folks have had bad delivery times/responses/missing orders from them and refuse to do business again w/ them because of it (not that I blame them... "1st time shame on you, 2nd time shame on me!"). I personally understand the issues BMI deal w/ on a weekly basis (especially round holidays)... and after the trial n error of parts not shipped... till after I called... that all stopped when ordering Tues-Thurs... for me.

Just wanted to follow up on this issue.. I received the new parts on the evening of the 8th
then we had a major upgrade at work through the whole 3-day holiday weekend so didn't back to this until Tuesday evening on the 13th. What I found was the rubber buttons were all well worn and were about even with the tops of the metal towers behind them, the new rubber buttons were all about an 1/8 inch above the tops of the metal towers on the pulley. I re-assembled the driven unit with the new spring and all 6 rubber buttons and has worked great since then ..... It is amazing these six little pieces of rubber can much such a huge difference in how these torque converters function! Thank for all the advice and assistance each of you provided in helping someone new to torque converters like myself resolve the issue with this unit and got us up and running with our "new" used toy...

Great to hear! Torque converters are awesome... And stay awesome with the proper knowledge and maintaince.

I hate to see people throw away the TC's just to buy a new one...
Also thanks for the follow up report.

This was just another one of those situations in which a good question is supported with the particulars and pics to help.
Enjoy the ride time!
