I just bought and installed a hilliards extreme heavy duty clutch on my cart it is a 10 tooth 41 chain with a 60 tooth sprocket and i think 14 in tires. everything works fine until it starts to catch and then the whole engine rocks. sometimes the chain falls off from rocking so hrd. once it catches it goes fine but my old clutch never did this at all and it was a 10 tooth too.

:iagree: w/Kenny & I'm
I think its time for a :cheers2:

Does the motor "rock" when you move it with your hand? If so "theers yer problem rite theer" :roflol:

But seriously, the motor is rocking, is the chain tight? Think this thread might need a video instead of pictures

ha it is def secured first thing i checked. i think there is something wrong with the clutch the springs i dont think are set right as in the shoes dont engange properly. cause my old clutch worked just fine. when the clutching is slipping and getting upto speed it is okay but as soon as the clutch goes to compeltly engage it starts acting funny as in the rocking. then after it is completly hooked up it runs smoothly.

Pull it off check the key, did it get mangled? Does the drum half of the clutch seperate from the other half? I had one that the key "failed" "fell out" "whatever" and the end bolt ate the drum end.

Am I right to assume that the clutch is rocking and the motors right where it belongs, lol.

Another question... When you first installed it and ran it was your chain like super tight? cause that can screw them up too.

(I think I will have this carved into my headstone but I'll say it anyway)

Can you take some pictures :roflol: inside and out?

sounds to me like ur chain is to tight. Loosen that baby up, better to be to loose than to tight. I had mine to tight, did what urs did and then is snapped my engine shaft off from to much stress.

It sounds like a dry clutch. Take it apart and lubricate the bushing with motor oil, and wipe a very small amount of oil on the friction surface, so your new clutch will break in nicely.

It will quiet it right up. It seems the Hilliard clutches are very hard-grabbing, so you have to lube them a bit to make them slip some. I have to lube my clutch OFTEN.

Funny

I read throw this forum to decide which clutch is best.
I thought that Hilliard spring style overcame Comet springs disadvatages hard grabbing etc.. I read that Hilliard have smooth engagement and no trouble with grabbing. :roflol:

Sprocket clutches are less durable than pulley.
(thin sleeve bearing, low strong and stability sprocket key connecting with drum, sprocket wear-out)

But have advantages half price, compact high gear ration, chain can´t slip.

WHICH CLUTCH HAS TROUBLEFREE SMOOTH GRABING ENGAGE?

It seems to that my own experience will be best :bannana:

Further I will use two gearing. Primary pulley/belt, secondary sprocket/chain.
I will take benefit of both. :idea2:

Clutch Sprocket Chain

Some manufacturer info:
(For maximal reliability parameters - wear-out, noise, stability etc.)

Normal distance B.C. of two sprockets is 40xpitch.
(100% performance)
Minimal distance B.C. of two sprockets is 20xpitch.
(85% performance)

Small crankshaft sprocket is highly recommenced with odd number of teeth minimal 17T. For tensing sprocket is best 13T.

The more RPM the less small sprocket pitch and more teeth.
(For hi-torque is using double/triple sprocket.)

Big sprocket is better odd too but little than even.

Chain is highly recommenced with even count of links.
(include connect link)

Chain can elongate between 1-2% in inruning.
(More than 2% indicate you need replace chain)

Correct deflection of chain at half B.C. distance:
20xp 11mm
40xp 23mm

Using Hillard Extreme Duty Centrifugal Clutch #35 12T.
On his video I dont see any trouble with clutch.
Only purchase 60T sprocket guard.

So, I look forward to my Hilliard #40/41.
I will use #40 chain. :cheers2:
