clutch play

I've repaired my 5 hp craftsmen and i went to mount it tonight and the clutch is "wobbily". everything is tight but the peice with the sprocket on it slides in and out. does somone know what it wrong with it? also when it idles the hole thing moves and not just the clutch part.

Worn out? there will always be some grab.

yeah, its pretty old, would you suggest buying a new clutch or is there some way of repairing the one i have now?

Most can be rebuilt with a new bushing.

You might be missing the little snap ring that goes on the end

If you can take off the sproketpart with shoes still on crank your missing snap ring.

ive got the snap ring. it seems like the entire clutch is moving back and forth on the shaft. it has the groove that the clutch gos on and theres a bolt that gos in on the end of the shaft.

Probably better off getting a new one. They're not at all expensive. Will save some frustration in the long run.
If integrity of clutch is questionable, just replace it.

alright, shold i buy one from northern tool or get one off ebay. Ive never ordered a clutch before so im not sure witch one would have the best quality.

As far as I've seen all cent clutches on a crankshaft that doesnt have a set screw has about 1/16 plus end play. Its normall and theres no reason to worry.

Well it does have a little set screw hole but no set screw.

XD you make a couple thousand's of end play sound so technical. IMO I would rather have it floating. A TAV-2-30 on the other hand would not be so good.

Im still not to sure about the clutch because the clutch part moves back and forth but from what you are telling me thats good, the clutch shoe on the other hand is basically just sitting on top of the clutch. when you have the chain and everything hooked up the motor just boggs out becuse the clutch shoe is not spinning (Im refering to the clutch shoe as the piece that the sprocket is attached to, correct me if im wrong)

No. The clutch shoe is part of the clutch that expands and grab
's the drum. The drum is the round metel drum that the sprocket is attached too. When the motor is revved high enough the clutch pads spin out and grab the drum, Thus turning the sprocket and making you move. And anyways its a $40 clutch they all have a little bit of play here and there. Dont worry about it. If she blow's she blow's. PS Get"R"done.

alright thanks for straightening me out on that, I guess i wil buy a new clutch from northern tool. the clutch i have now has a 12tooth sprocket and a 60 tooth on the axle, would you suggest going more or less teeth on the clutch to give the kart more speed?
