Clutch bolt coming loose

Clutch bolt either comes loose or is to tight and kart wont accelerate correctly. Any ideas?

This is on Briggs 5hp

Haven’t used locktite or anything on it just yet since its something Ive been putting back together.

Well I think you’re right, the shaft just isn’t long enough. What do I do about that?

You need to clean up that shaft.. looks like something might be broken off inside...

Need to take up the space a bit... Some washers or the like... Just so it passes the length of the shaft...

By that you mean smaller washers that fit inside the clutch to extend it, then tighten it down on those? I can definitely try that.

Check the back to see if there is good clearance and not rubbing on the sideplate...

So there’s a spacer I added between the back of the clutch and the engine to keep it far enough out to align with the sprocket.

BMI Karts and Parts has a clutch bolt on kit ( for a 3/4" shaft ) that has a bolt, washer, lock washer, and small piece 3/4" dia. that will add around 3/4' length to the shaft. Cost about 5$.

Shipping might cost around 10$ but if it works I think its wort it.

I bought several washers yesterday to extend the bolt out past the end of the clutch so that should resolve it, it not I’ll order that kit. Will hold off on loctite for now as I might take everything back apart to paint it when everything is running correctly.

Ok, so you put a spacer behind the clutch to align it with the sprocket. Honestly I say take that spacer off. Those clutches are made to take up the length of the shaft exactly.
To solve the resulting alignment problem, stack washers underneath the sprocket instead.
That’s how my setup works.

Ya.. only space off if needed for back space clearance...
Move the motor(or rear sprocket to align with front) to align with sprocket....
And... what part are you painting???? Not the clutch I hope????

So without that spacer behind the clutch, the sprocket on the clutch does not align with the larger wheel sprocket on the axle. Engine is all the way over as far as it will go in the mounting plate.

You might need to hog out the holes to allow it to move over to get better alignment...

Yeah I could see if theres space on that mounting bracket to do that and remove the spacer behind the clutch.

How much play should there be in the chain? Also how much space should there be between the clutch sprocket and the larger axle sprocket?

Chain should have about 3/8" of movement(NOT slack).
