As my kart build is for the grandkids to drive as a street kart, I have a HF 6.5 clone engine and plan on using a 6.6:1 drive ratio with a 10T clutch and a 66T split sprocket on the axle for the eventual quick change. Tires are 11.5 diameter and it's a live axle kart (old Dart Super K.) Speeds should be 20 max

1) should I be looking at a Hilliard or Max-Torque clutch?

2) 35 or 40/41 chain? This may impact clutch sprocket selection.

3) If I leave the governor in play for the kids, what will be the max RPM I can realistically expect? This also will impact ratio selection.

Most engines are governed for 3600rpm, and with your planned gearing you would get you desired speed.

I would think either of those clutches would be fine. I had a max torque on my gokart and it worked fine.

Either chain size would be fine, unless you already have your drive sprocket? Both my karts have 35 chain, while my minibike has 40/41.

I was in the same situation a while ago. I started out with a hilliard and later changed to a max torque. The max torque was a lot smoother. I guess 6 shoes vs. 4 in the hilliard was the reason.

3) 3600 RPM is generally (99.9999%) the factory setting. You can adjust the governor's max point with a simple screwdriver up to somewhere between 4000-4200RPM.

hey umm toystory 4wd i am planning to build my very first go kart and i have a beginers question. i am planing to buy a 6.5hp engine equipped with a Hilliard Extreme Duty clutch 10t #41 chain and my axle sprocket will be 54t with 15" tires, i've been reading your comments and you seem like a well knowledgeable guy. i was wondering if this is a good set up?

Not a bad starting point, but you're probably better off in the 60T range. There are many factors in selecting a gear ratio, most notably kart weight and intended use. I suggest you design and build before purchasing sprockets. Until you have a plan, it's all academic, as the weight could be all over the place.
