Ive been checking this thread religiously-- I am really excited about the progress/end product. However, and please dont take this the wrong way, but the engine stickers detract from the kart's originality.

This project has inspired me to find some vintage karts and bring them back from the dead.

Thanks for following this thread. It has been a lot of fun working on this project. I completely get the sticker concern. There are several reasons here at play. 1st is my son is a crazy engine kid. Hemi is his thing. So of course I'm playing it up for him. He also likes the coolness of the Go-Kart brand too. I have had to all along respect what he considers cool and sprinkle in my attention to detail. After all, it is his gift, not mine. I didn't even want to restore it with The Rebel graphic. My wife actually insisted that I did. I do have a old Briggs 5hp to put on it some day. Or I will redo an old Clark Cyclops 440, and that will be completely original! When I first found the kart I figured I would powder coat it red and make it look like a basic vintage kart with a modern engine and go from there. Keeping it a Rebel was just something my wife talked me into.

Here are some finishing touches to the kart. A couple of custom Clark decals. I also got the chain hooked up. Having an issue with the chain being tight then loose then tight as I spin the axle. It's tight then loose every half rotation. I have tried for hours trying to resolve the issue. Moved the engine side to side did not effect it either. The engine is square. Moved the clutch and sprocket in and out. Tried to just rotate the axle with both loose and that should have been enough to bring everything into perfect alignment. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I did notice a slight wobble in the sprocket. Could this be enough to effect the chain?

The sprocket could do that to you....or your axle is slightly bent

I'm leaning towards the axle too. It was one of the only things I salvaged. It was in bad shape but cleaned up nice. I'll be ordering a new one this week. I was just trying to save a few bucks!

Long shot, but I had the same issue with the chain getting tight/loose when spun. First checked the sprocket, which I'd replaced, thinking the center collar might have been welded on offset. Checked out good. Then thought maybe the axle might be bent, replaced it, still had the problem.

Finally determined the chain had 2 master links, and someone had used #35 chain (correct) but had spliced in what I think was bicycle chain. Looked very close, but that's what was causing the problem. A new #35 chain - problem solved!

NICE RESTORATION!
