Hey! I did it! I built a custom muffler for my kart today, worked out amazing! When you crack the throttle, you get an authoritative Harley-like BRAAP! But it's not obnoxiously loud. Perfect. I even showed it to my cop neighbour and he loves it... Life's good!
Okay, so the cylinder was a CO2 actuation cartridge for a fire suppression system. It held CO2 at about 3000psi, and as such, is a pretty thick unit. The ends were more than 1/4" thick, the sides about 1/8". A heavy peice, but I was hoping it would deepen the tone. It worked. For the guts, I used some advice from you fine folks, and cheated a little. I did weld a stop in the middle of the pipe, but instead of drilling a zillion holes, I cut a whole bunch of slots with my grinder. Once that was done, I welded the pipe into the canister. I had to test it, so I have not yet cleaned up the welds or painted it. I'm hoping to find a red paint that can take the heat, because it HAS to be red! Glad to see it turned out so well. I never woulda though of using slotts rather than holes, genius! If you get time, post a vid of it

Yeah, I'll make a brace for it. I was hoping to find a piece of pipe bent at 90* (don't have a bender) with a tighter radius. The 1" EMT conduit I used from Home Depot has about a 6" radius and I'd like to get it tighter to the engine. Guess I'll brace it for now.
Pipe and all, it's about 5lbs. And yeah, I'll do a vid in the next couple days. I'm proud of this one. Thanks!

No worries. Probably won't be driving it again 'till next weekend, at which time I'll make a brace, paint it up, and probably a video, too.

i also made a tiny muffler for my shopping cart... i also used the slot method instead of the million holes... it works surprisingly well (only did a test holding the muffler in front of the turbo with my hand)

Thanks, man- I'm really proud of it. No vid yet. I've had to do exhaust work (go figure) on both my vehicles for the **** drive clean crap so I've been pretty busy. I will do one soon, as well as the brace.

Looks great! What paint did you use? The only stuff I found at Canadian Tire that looked like it could handle the heat was bloody $14.00 for a lousy spray can! I normally wouldn't allow myself to spend that much on a spray can, but it HAD to be red! What'd you use?

Armor coat high heat barbecue paint... rated at 1200*f i think i paid 6$ for the can

i also used that paint on the turbo's housing... cant wait to see how well it'll handle the heat

(note that parts were sandblasted prior to paint so it may help the paint staying on)

Thanks. You'll have to let me know how it withstands the heat, maybe I can use it the next time, although I don't know what other colours it's available in...
EDIT- While I was off at Canadian Tire getting my Durango smogged today, I looked at the BBQ paint. Only available in black. What if I want a purple BBQ? Huh? Anybody ever consider that?

Awesome muffler. I like it. How did you get the stop welded in the pipe? Did you weld it through one of your slots or go in through the end?

I shaped a piece of 16ga sheet to the ID of the pipe, leaving a tab on one end. Holding the tab with pliers, I slid it thru a slot in the middle till it bottomed, and tacked it in. Ground off the tab, and finished the weld.
The alternative (what I was told to do), is cut the pipe in half, weld the stop in, then re-weld the pipe together. I gotta be different...

I actually didnt cut mine entirely in half either, it was just easier to describe. Some of that high heat paint is a real RIP-OFF
