Usually its rust on the pulley sheaves. But where your wear is happening it look like the belt is riding real low in the driven unit and rubbing the rivets. As the belt wears it will keep getting narrower.

A new belt is the only way to fully remedy this.
Make sure the spacing is correct between your center to center of the cvt according to the belt.

And Dennys always mumbling about a genuine Comet belt.

I've found Rotary belts to be just fine also.

This is unprecedented. Between similar statements like the above and Hack’s red arrows photo, the fall from grace of the exalted Genuine Comet Belt is wholly unheard of. The mighty contender Rotary has stepped into the ring and Comet is down for the count!

Hey can you cut the burrs off the belt with a sharp knife and drive on contentedly or just bear with the squealing?

I could, are you asking others, or me?

Having those little frays, it pulls the rest of the cord out. You can snip them and make the belt last a little longer.

Even worse case it will cut a nice straight line in your CVT cover.

A V- belt uses the angled sides to transfer power.
If the belt and the pully surface dont match, you have a loss of power transfer.
If the belt is glazed its probably loose and cooked the rubber. There is little friction to transfer power.
If the belt is worn or missing some side wall it won't ride in the pully correctly and again loss of power transfer.

Change the belt squidward and double check the alignment and spacing.
