Chariots of fire??? :roflol:
Quite a show, if nothing else! And a good reminder to maintain your clutch!

I might be wrong..
but it appears the clutch overheated ever so slightly,

call me chicken,
but I wouldn't like to see angry red glowing clutch shoes
come jumping at me..

I also wouldn't want to be found dead with that stupid pair of sunglasses in the same room..

Ya... I hear ya..
It's a cool pic for sure... And doing the experiment would be interesting...
But .... A test cell blast chamber.. or blast shield device to contain the reminants would be better..

Ya those sunglasses... Are a bit much for sure...

Even just a plexiglas box around it as a containment shield, even just around the clutch would do it. Was at least entertaining to watch.

Amazing to see the thing heat up enough to soften the bell,
so that you can see the imbalance of each and every shoe bulging it out.

impressive indeed.

Yeah, after watching the video it's really quite amazing! Part of me feels bad for what's left of that clutch, but it's a really cool reminder to take care of our clutches! I'm just amazed it produced enough friction to literally melt the drum!

It definitely got red hot, but yeah, drum didn't melt. Wonder how much longer it would have lasted, if he didn't cut the drum up like he did to show the shoes working?

It looked like the coil spring that got super heated and let go. Some if not all of the clutch shoes were red hot as well. The drum was well deformed from the extreme heat and abuse from the shoes.

The hot drum rolled from the weights throwing out, and caused it to roll like a doughnut.
Red hot metal will move easilly if enough force... In this case the drum was mostly removed to show more detail...so inherently weaker to be reformed..

Ahhh, Ok. What I call "melting" you guys call "deforming". Got it.

NOPE! DO NOT call it melting..
melting is a phase change.. in this case from solid to liquid
(molten icecubes are water and such.. you know the word)

that is NOT liquid metal, that is gooey alright, but far from liquid..
it's not even at forging temp really by far not at casting temp

look at it this way.. it's likely carbon steel, right?
carbon steel has a melting temperature of 1430-1540°C
(2597 - 2804 Frankensteins)
or thereabouts

judging by the colour (a warm yellow.. thanks mac for that last pic btw ;))
it's at 980°C max when it gives away.. (1796 Frankfurters)
500°C (or 932F) BELOW it's melting point.
and still 300°C below ideal forging temperature

it's transitioning, but still far from melting!

It doesn't help that the title says "Watch This Go-Kart Clutch Melt and Fail Spectacularly in Slow-Motion" ....
