Without knowing the frequency of the pulses, I'm not doing a lot more than guessing, but I'd say that you might need 20 or 30 thousand microfarads of capacitance. Again, a battery may be a better choice in your case since the smoothed voltage may not even be high enough to give any light at all during idling.
