How important is sizing the port on a carb to the port in the motor? I would think the carb would work if port was larger, or smaller. Just how well it works is another matter. I would suspect that larger is better. I ask this because I turned a vert. shaft B&S up on end yesterday, and had to build an adaptor plate to remount carb. I have done away with governor, and can attach throttle and choke as required. The factory carb that came on the engine is nasty, but rebuildible. But, I have a brand new carb for another motor, make and model unknown. It would be very simple to retap the adaptor plate for this carb. I would think it would work, but how well??? For my application, adequate would suffice.

how can we judge the adequacy of a carb if we now NOTHING about said carb?
not what engine it was on or made for, no make and model .. not even a picture to make a guess?

When in doubt, take the sucker out of the box and really look at it. The new carb I mentioned is a Mikuni. I googled this, and found out it is a motor bike carb. It had 320 stamped on the motor side, and I take this to be the jet size. The inlet side is a little over one inch, the motor side a little less. This carburator is far too small for my B&S, I think. I am probably better off buying a down draft off a comparable size horizonal motor and quit trying to re engineer.
Thanks to all.

Landuse,
It appears that the clock is not even plugged in. If it was at least plugged in would it not at least be flashing 12:00? Maybe it is just the angle we are viewing it at? Next a Ventura is a Pontiac the later ones were the same size as a Chevy Nova.
A venturi is a "device" used to speed up air flow in the carb throat. It provides for a low pressure area for fuel to be pushed up and atomized in the air flow. Too big of a venturi=too slow air flow and lazy throttle response. We'll get this darned clock fixed for you yet, just give us some time. We will need better pictures of it and the cord and maybe the outlet also so please post them up a.s.a.p.

looks like a 22mm carb... (trying to eyeball the size.. *shrugs*)

I say go for it, should work if you can make it fit the flange.

Size

intake end, a little over 27mm, block end a little over 24mm. The bolt holes could be elonginated easily enough, but then the problem of rigging a breather pops up. Probably more trouble than it is worth. Up side, it is brand spanking new. It has a spring loaded choke set up that I like. I bought a down draft carb with breather off ebay. If it does the job, I will use it. If not, then I will try the Micuni.
Thanks for all the input, especially about my clock.
