okay so some of you know i have a truck. bought it with my own money. 1989 F150 with unknown mileage.(odometer+speedo broken). its been through at least a life and a half

i got a job i am starting monday that is a 50 minute drive each way. plus when school starts i will be driving 50 minutes each way to school, then work, then home.

so the problem is this old gas guzzling truck will be getting A LOT of miles every day, and if it breaks down once then im in big trouble... meaning missing school and work. that cant happen.

my parents suggested that i need a reliable and more fuel efficient vehicle. the truck is great and im definitely keeping it, its very useful and fun to drive.

i dont want to get a car that is too expensive because im going to have to pay back my parents as i work.


some options i was thinking about...
-jeep (maybe yj or cherokee?)
-ford explorer (90's? they are very cheap. $500-$800)
-ford mustang (older ones arent too expensive)
-camaro?
-beamer (1990-2000 not too expensive)

i'd prefer a manual. but if its a really nice car and its automatic, thats not going to make me loose all interest. my top budget would be 3 or 4 grand

opinions?

If you can dig up the money to get a Civic, I'd highly suggest it. They get great gas mileage, are generally easy to find with manual trannys, and darn near last forever. I get about 31 city, 37 highway in my '05.

A '98 Civic LX w/ manual tranny, 150k miles, and standard options is valued around $2,500 in good condition by KBB. In fair condition, $1,900.

Jeeps usually have all freakin kinds of parts available...
Our Grand gets maybe 20mpg with I6 full time 4X4. I imagine it would do better non full time 4X4...

The 4cyl would probably be better on gas, but would move like a turd...

Keep things like repairs in mind, I would imagine you would want to work on it yourself...
Something that parts are available, and cheap, and something that is easy to work on is always nice.

If you are looking for gas mileage I would stick with hatchbacks and sedans. The civic sounds like a pretty good choice. I agree with B.M.800, cost of parts should be a factor, and I think BMW might be expensive. Do note that I don't know much about cars, I could help you out a lot more if you wanted a motorcycle.

Yeah- stay out of the SUV's. The gas mileage ain't so great, and parts and repairs can get costly. FYI, I've had 2 Gn 1 Explorers, and my dad had one, too. The electronic shift for the 4x4 is a constant source of amusement.

I burnt way too much fuel for work last year, so I bought a beater Subaru Legacy.

a 4 cyl would be fine. my 5,600lb truck has a 6 cyl (150hp) and it gets moving right along. fully loaded its 6,600lbs

any used car is going to have its own problems. ive found that F150 parts are very cheap. but im sure stuff like BMW parts would be a lot..

Yeah... That was trippy. Well, I put a few hundred miles on it this week for work under varying conditions, and the A/C-morphed-into-tranny hose is holding well...

What did you end up doing to that bike you got?

Still working on it, the sucker fought being taken apart all the way to the very last bolt... Once I had that done I spent a while inspecting parts and seeing what needed to be replaced. It turned out that the engine had been rebuilt recently and had no internal problems. After that I spent more time experimenting with paint strippers, wire brushes, etc. Nothing was working for me, so in late may I tried the homemade soda blaster. Since I do not own a compressor I borrowed my neighbors pancake compressor, that thing had no balls! I then convinced the guy at the heavy equipment rental place to rent me their largest gasoline powered compressor. That compressor (and like 50lbs of baking soda, I got some weird looks buying that at stop and shop ) did a decent job.

Once that was done I spent more time cleaning all the engine parts, and then finished painting them a week ago. I'm actually ordering gaskets tonight so I should be putting it back together and getting it running soon. In the middle of all this I have also been selling off part from the original motorcycle. Yeah, there has been a lot of work put into that engine. Once it's running I will be happy, but if I were to do it again I would just save up until I had 1-2 grand and buy something modern and running, with parts that were worth more on e-bay. Funny thing is, i might still have less into this engine than I do in my 6hp engine w/ GTC CVT, .

i think they're way cheaper than that if you goto police/govt auctions. Theirs is an interceptor

i think they are the 4.6 litre engine same/similar to the v8 explorer maybe/iduno

you mean chipped ecu or some kind of gps tracking device?? lol

edit: as for gas milage i imagine that cruising on the highway they wouldn't be much worse than a smaller car but around town they would chew through it. Who cares anyway petrol is still cheap in the states make the most of it while you still can.

I'd vote for the jeep. I'll be buying a newer Wrangler soon and love the style of them. However with what you've learned with the truck you likely can find a good older 90's styled Wrangler and if problems do occur you've got many options fixing them. I've seen wild deals on them here in Houston, just look around.

You don't want those kind of girls. They'll be into you one day, and into the guy with the Camaro the next.

And yeah, insurance will suck with anything sport related. Even a sedan with a sports package will be more. 2-doors are also usually worse on insurance.

DO NOT GET A FORD. there trucks are great... the cars not so much. But defiantly a Small 4cyl. A small honda is nice. also Toyota and Nissan are great with mpg.

well i think if i got a $4000 mustang i would be able to pay it off. at this point in my life i am 16 and i have no bills to pay so 100% of the money i make is at my dispense lol.

i think a 302 V8 in a light car would get better mileage than my 300 I6 in a heavy truck.

its not cheap lol. around $4.30 a gallon

i think just about anything is better on gas than that 300 I6 though. i read it was advertised to get 13 city and 16 highway. so probably less than that
