DO NOT GET A FORD. there trucks are great... the cars not so much. But defiantly a Small 4cyl. A small honda is nice. also Toyota and Nissan are great with mpg.

i think that after what my truck went through and its still going means something about ford... 23 years on a abused vehicle with little maintenance is impressive... the PO was a cheapo for sure lots of redneck fixes to keep it pushin... and it sat the last few years since it was beat on in a farm

And yeah, insurance will suck with anything sport related. Even a sedan with a sports package will be more. 2-doors are also usually worse on insurance.

I'd vote for the jeep. I'll be buying a newer Wrangler soon and love the style of them. However with what you've learned with the truck you likely can find a good older 90's styled Wrangler and if problems do occur you've got many options fixing them. I've seen wild deals on them here in Houston, just look around.

i heard that jeep stopped production of their tough I6 (6 years ago?) and that the newer engines were crap... just something to research i dont know if its true

i like the look of a jeep wrangler on 33's

btw my mom doesnt like the idea of a jeep because she doesnt think they are good commuter cars and they arent safe

The first trip to the store I got 2 ten pound boxes, they didn't pay any attention. The second trip when I bought 3 more boxes, covered with about half of one of the other boxes I just bought kinda freaked them out...

Engine is going into a mini buggy, I have been planning to build one for over a year now. I will be getting started on the frame this fall, an the CAD model should be done in a week or so. Once I start on the frame I will make a project log. Read my signature.

Someday I will have a motorcycle (maybe motorcycles ) to ride, but not for a while. Both my parents hate the idea of me riding a motorcycle. My dad especially, he is a physical rehab doctor and some of his patience are motorcycle crash victims.

$4.50/gal is expensive for the U.S.A I'll give you that, but in most other countries people would be delighted to pay that. When I was in London a year ago petrol was something like $8 to $9 a gallon!

The older i6 was strong, however the newer engines have just gotten better and better. Its one of those things that the first 2 years weren't amazing but they've ironed out the problems. Such is change.

You can argue that they are very strong due to the roll cage design. Also if the a/c doesn't work you can just ride with the doors off. If you get manual then your mileage will be better and likely a higher mileage vehicle the worst you would need to do is replace the clutch.

My vote is for a small 4 cylinder like a ford escort or toyota corolla: small, run on the smell of an oily rag & parts are a dime a dozen. Then you can actually save money to put into your truck, projects, etc

As for small fords being junk: I'm a Holden (GM) fan & when I was young I said I would never own a Ford or a front wheel drive. Guess what, I've owned two escorts (we call it a Laser over here) &, dollar for dollar, pound for pound, they were the best cars I've owned; almost bulletproof & go like the clappers

well i think if i got a $4000 mustang i would be able to pay it off. at this point in my life i am 16 and i have no bills to pay so 100% of the money i make is at my dispense lol.

i think a 302 V8 in a light car would get better mileage than my 300 I6 in a heavy truck.

Where the heck are you paying $4.30 a gallon? Diesel isn't even that expensive here. Last gas station I passed was $3.59 for 87.

A manual cavalier! A buddy of mines got one and he loves it. He gets in the upper 20's for mileage, and he drives it hard. They work great too!

i think you just need to get a cheap car that you can use as a back up vehicle if the ford brakes. i know my dad got me to run some numbers and he seemed to be getting 21mpg on the hiway in his 2wd ford f150 with the 4.9L 5 speed. i think you need to see about getting your speedo working and figure out what type of gas mileage you are getting. i think the only way to beat what you could get with the ford is getting a car. civics are nice but any small 4 cylinder car would probably do just as good.

Yup- same here. The past week we've been $1.30/litre. This is why I got rid of my 5.2 litre Dodge Durango. I was burning about $150 per week to go to work...

Jeeps are just as safe as most vehicles, Its just the shorter wheel base that changes everything. Generally a shorter wheelbase wants to wander much more than a long one but the trade off is much better maneuverability. Once you get used to it then they handle better than most cars, at least that's what I've been told. So if you do get a jeep then don't let any one else drive it.

I know that when I need to get a vehicle I'm garbing a 4 banger jeep or small Toyota truck.

I had a '90 Jeep Yj Wrangler for a couple of years. The turning radius is amazing. Some notes-

Mine was a ragtop- If you get one, leave your doors unlocked! If someone wants to break in, they WILL get in. Theives have NO PROBLEM running a knife through your $1000 vinyl top or door halves! My Jeep got broken into 3 times. All 3 times I had left my doors unlocked, all 3 times there was no damage, and once, nothing was even stolen.

If you're getting an older one, avoid the 4 cylinder. The Wrangler has the aerodynamics of a brick. I spent more time in 4th at 75MPH than 5th. Not enough power.

And- Winter at 75MPH with soft doors and top= bring a blanket!

something else you may want to consider when thinking about buying a jeep is insurance. jeeps usually also cost a lot more than a than normal vehicles because the short wheel base and and removable top can make them a bit more dangerous if they roll. i know my friend had a picture of his jeep on its side.

Hey Blue, you might consider a 1990's era Toyota pickup with the 22RE engine/5-speed. (2 or 4wd)

We bought a used 93, 4x4 model 10 years ago. We got well over 200 thousand miles on it and havent really had any problems. I get around 30mpg when I really try for good mileage. Ours came with a topper/camper shell that's handy for keeping stuff secure/dry.

I realise you'll still have yer ford for hauling big stuff, but I got a feeling you'd still benefit from a small pickup for daily driving and being able to haul some stuff around. If your like me, driving a smaller sized car just wont cut it...

Excellent choice! I've had two late '70's Celicas with the 20R/5speed, an '84 Pickup with the 22r/5speed, and an '88 4runner with the 22RE/5speed. Very happy with all of them. I retired my '77 Celica with about 300,000 miles, having done not much more than the timing chain.
