I have been playing with the thought that I should make a go kart with a car engine and axle. The car in question is a mazda rx/8 because of its bhp per liter. I have a few ideas running the engine at the steering column at an angle and then have the drive shaft go under the seat and to the the limited slip diff which is attached either behind the chassis or on the chassis. I plan on shortening the drive shaft by half and then extending the go kart by nearly a meter which should give enough space for the drive line. I plan on putting a cold air intake which will give me an extra 20 hp on top of the 228 hp stock. This makes more than 50 bhp more than that r1 kart and is only a bit heavier. It will have beefy front brake from a motorbike and maybe rears if I can work with them, if not then I will put on a parachute. I want to keep it low as possible and it will be reinforced as much as we can. I am making this for the go kart speed world record Any advice on the project would be greatly appreciated and I will be posting pictures of the project.
Thanks

The current "Go Kart World Speed Record" is over 250 mph (253, to be exact).
Aussie Rosco MacGlashan set it in 1980 on a rocket powered kart.
Since there are no organized classes for kart speed records, that's what you're gonna have to beat to be "the fastest go kart in the world".
Good luck....and send us pictures.

Yes wood would be an excellent choice, seeing how world records are being sought.

1st...how much cash you have? putting a several thousand dollar engine into a kart!?!?

Though, a rotary engine makes a lot of sense because they are compact compared to a normal engine.

It would be truly insane. The old RX7's were a handful with the rotary engine and being fairly light. A kart with such a motor would be terrifying.

I certainly wouldn't think about brakes smaller than what a car would have. Just seems like a bad idea to cut any corners when you have something that should go over 150mph. Even if you keep the frame as light as possible, it should still weigh more than most motorcycles.

I don't think an extra 20hp is needed when you have 200hp already. BUT, if you really want HP, build it into a 3 rotor engine :) And then but a big A turbo on it :)

What gets me is how Robert or any mod is gonna say: " This is not the way to treat new members " ......with a straight face.....

Well, you're correct, a simple DO YOU HAVE A DEATH WISH OR SOMETHING would suffice...

KlaudioP, in all my time here I have onlt ever seen one car engine in a buggy, NOT a kart...

As mentioned, yes, in the past, a few have built severely overpowered engines into go karts but, they either had years of racing experience or were just plain stupid...

why not shoot for the stars, and add a unsinkable bodykit with wings..
then you can set all three.. air, land and sea speed records at once...

:horse:

Let me guess, you're less than 15 years old, am I close?

I'm thinking something like this as a starting point.
There's room at the rear for the parachute, and as it has one hand steering you can use the other to pull the cord on the 'chute when you go for the record.
I'd probably use Harbor Freight wheels though, save a few bucks.
