The only thing wrong with the spring is it lost its tension when the string broke.

Can you post some pics that aren't so close? I think I can help you but, I need to be able to see what I'm dealing with

:wai: Unfortunately, that pull starter is not made to be repaired. They are consider to be throw aways. Only option is a new one, either OEM/A.M. I know I am going to catch some flack, but I have tried every trick in the book to repair them.

Anything can be fixed, you just have to work out how :)

Can I assume this is off a predator or other honda clone?
Have you looked for honda replacement parts?
Is part of the string still attached to the centre?
Where/how is the string attached on the inside end?
If you wind the carrier counter clockwise does the tension build up at all (it may take a few turns)?

Does this help at all? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgJCdrnCnwg

:wai: In that video, there is a bolt holding it togehter, easy repair. The on the one that Kengthao91 posted, it has been crimped/swegded over. Like I stated throw away. Also just another way for the engine manufacture to get more money out of us.

I don't think you can fix it also.... I've tried many ways to try to get into the spring, but nothing works.... So the last thing I did was torch that crap to see if I can close that cramped/hole part.... But end up messing it up so I just threw it away and order a new one.... Hopefully it fits :(

Agreed! I have serviced a zillion "non-serviceable" things over the years. Sometimes it a matter of cutting/grinding/drilling something apart and gluing/riveting/welding/bolting it back together when it's all said and done.

For a shop, yeah- pitch it. For a DIY-guy on a budget, such as myself, well- it gets fixed.

Since a "shop" as a general term is an environment wherein a client pays for parts and service, then that's a bit of a game-changer, no?

Bottom line- I don't care how somebody else spends their money, but I'm pretty careful about how I spend mine.

:wai:Toystory_4wd, on the game changer part, yes and no. To be Honest and Fair to my customers. If the new part cost less than my time to repair it, they get a new one.My shop has a budget to, you have to remember that my money is on the line when buying replacement/repair parts. As I do not get paid until the customer pays. I also understand about the DIY'ers. Fabroman, on a 200$ part, it would depended on how much damage and time wether to replace/repair. But to answer your question, yes.

I understand. I have to make the same assessments when I do this stuff for paying customers. Not my bread and butter, but you can well imagine that folks come to me from time to time to fix their junk.

What I was getting at was a personal, non-business, hobby standpoint. Yes- I would just just fix the recoil instead of buying a new one.

:wai: TS, hope you do not mind that I short cut your handle, I quess I could call myself a DIY'er, as I maintain my own equipment. Talk about junk (well worn equipment) you should see some of stuff that comes into my shop. I even have Dealers send me customer's, because they do not want to deal with the older well worn equipment. I also understand your statement on personal, non-business and hobby stand point.

I don't mind at all! We all have opinions, and they do differ sometimes- nothing wrong with getting into a debate!

As long as the "argument" (see classical definition) doesn't get into personal shots or general idiocy, then it is certainly welcome.
