Can you rent a tire mounting tool?

Last winter, I had to unmount and remount a snowblower tire on a 6" rim. It was a total nightmare.

This summer, I'd like to pop off my dingo's tires, replace the valve stems and probably replace the 25 year old tires.
But thats probably the last time I'll be mounting small tires and rims like this for years and years, so I don't want to buy the kit, not even the harbor freight one.

I know autozone well rent tools to people essentially for free. Do they or anyone else do anything like that for a small tire mounter?

And no I'm not going to buy one at HF and then just return it when I'm done.

Remounting a tire of that size is easy at least to me, and I use the ‘fire method‘ to seat the rim and do the initial inflate.
Unmounting is the nightmare, I agree, especially if it‘s stuck on the rim with the help of rust.
I might just buy the HF tire machine or similar from a vendor. I’ve got tons of small tire vehicles…..

I wouldn’t have suspected they’d have a small one for rent but it never hurts to ask in the old fashioned way ☎️

WTR has the right idea though.

On this old snowblower, both were miserable. It took a week to get it unmounted, I had to build my own custom tire press from scrap plywood and a bunch of giant clamps i had. Then I had to buy some big 14" metal tire levers to get it back on. But still, other than this one tire change on this go kart, I likely have no small tire repairs to do. Even the snow blower whose tire I repaired, is getting sold, and my primary snowblower has tracks, no tires.

I just buy from HF, use it, then sell it. Tire stores will probably do it, but grudgingly. They don't have the right tools for small tires. IF there is a tractor dealer or a small engine repair shop, they would probably have the right tool. Auto Zone does not rent tire changers.

Those small tires can be deceptively brutal, especially if they’ve been sitting that long. Honestly, if it’s a one-time job, calling around to a small engine shop or tractor place might save you a lot of frustration for not much money.

I might be buying one of these soon, either the full size deal or the small tire changer. I’ve got projects that would greatly benefit from separating the rotten tires from the rims FIRST, fixing the tires and turning the machine into a viable roller (so’s you can move it around the shop).

Any recommendations on type/brand?

😊 Will sell it if/when I feel I can no longer use it. To mitigate tire and wheel disasters, seems steel rims are the real culprit as well outdoor storage but aluminum rims can be just as bad. I wonder how to mitigate this in the future.............

I bought a Hobo Fright small tire changer for about 70 bucks last week. It is about 18-20 inches tall and on a steel base about 6x6. I plan to weld it to a removable receiver hitch ball adapter with a 2 inch offset so I csn plug it in and use it, then store it in the tool box when not needed. Most of my small tires are on split rims, so breaking the beads will be the biggest job for this tool.

Big name brand tire shops are the worst. Most don't want to, and many don't have employees that know how to anyway. A small independent shop ( sometimes on the wrong side of the tracks ) is much more likely to help you. I'm lucky enough to have such a shop a couple of miles away from where I live. Life is too short to wrestle with those miserable things. Pay someone who has the proper equipment and know how, and spend your time doing something you like.
