Hey guys,
I recently pulled the gov on my 6.5hp clone.
Put everything back together reset valve lash at TDC.
Occasionally now on about every 3rd pull the pull cord is pulling back hard.....
Once started it runs as it should.
I have read this it the compression relief mechanism causing this.
Is this true?

So...Back into side cover huh?

Can I or do I pull and remove the mechanism or just adjust it?

Here are two links
I used.

You do not want to remove it. To do so will lead to more problems.
Probably can not be adjusted.
Verify flywheel key integrity.

Okay thanks, I was thinking the mech was stuck open making t harder to pull. Since about 3/4 of the way through the pull, it yanks the cord back.
I have yet to remove flywheel on this engine, but I can check.

There's a very small chance for the mechanism to fail, but it still can..

picture it this way, once you pull really hard, you might be able to generate enough centripetal force to disable the compression release (like when you have a worn spring for example)

If your engine doesn't start up, you cannot be sure about the position of the cam, and the small lever may snap back onto the sidewall of the lifter, disabling the mechanism for the next rotation again
(very hard pull)

you might be able to fix that with a new spring (compression release),
but as Russ said, it probably cannot be adjusted (i.e. is not meant to be replaced)
in which case, a new Cam would be the way to fix that problem...

honestly, If you feel it locking up, I'd turn the crank manually backwards for maybe a a quarter rotation to allow the release to snap under the lifter, and try again.

PS See if you can buy said spring seperately , if so, it's likely that you can replace yours, if not... not ;)
