G'day to everyone here on the forums. My first post but been reading a lot of useful information here.
I am about to attempt my first gokart build for my wife and 2yr old son to get around our small property. Basically I am thinking front and rear suspension compact side by side.
Inventory of parts i have gathered up from around the yard i need opion on. Engine I have a 6.5hp horizontal shaft clone or (and my favorite choice) an 18hp Lhead horizontally opposed twin B&S, vertical shaft. I have a peerless style transmission 5 speed with reverse from a junked 8hp rover rancher (i think similar to a Toro). To my untrained eye it appears to be the same unit used in the 13 &15hp models with manual trans. I also removed the rear axle from the same machine which may yield me 2 rims, the axle is junk. Lastly I have a rear differential which is also a peerless type unit from the rear of a cox ride on mower/tractor. The alloy casing in the center is about the size of a beer can and it only has 4 bolts holding it together they are grouped into 2 groups of 2 on opposite sides if that makes sense or helps identifying it.
My concerns are whether the trans and my beer can differential will survive the L18. I really only need this thing to perform along the lines of a lawn tractor and hopefully be able to pull or 100litre spray tank on fairly flat even going or similar weight general purpose trailer. Which is why I am really wanting the torque of the L18 verse the clone. I really want to keep a differential in the plan for ease of steering tight low speed.
Basic plan at this stage is rear mount the L18 1" belt centrifical clutch. Make the belt do the transition to a swinging arm suspension setup adjusted by a spring loaded tensioner from a car serpentine belt setup. Mount trans to swinging arm, chain drive to beer can differential but will need axle extensions to make it out to side by side wheel track.

What do you want a diff on there for There no good for off road
It'll have great turning, but preformce will be bad once you get into Gravel, mud etc If you had pavment it would probably be fine. Theres a pretty good chance you'll only have one tire spinning most the time, That means you'll be getting Stuck lots especially pulling that 100 litres of water around
