Is that opening a pipe thread fitting along with having a 2-bolt flange on the outside?

Yes. Threads inside, 2 bolts outside.

I remember I had one just like this where I bolted on a mini-bike muffler I found. It stuck out about 3 feet and looked ridiculous so of course it was going to catch something and break off at the bolts. Luckily for me, I was still able to just take some plain ol' plumbing pipe and screw it in. Eventually made a Y out of the pipes. Sounded pretty cool.

Either one of these will work, just as an example.

I was going to ask because I wasn't sure if it was 1/2" or 3/4" pipe thread. Growing up, the Cub Cadet up the road from me had a pipe like that for an exhaust system. A short piece coming out of the engine, a 90 degree elbow and about 12" of pipe sticking straight up. Man was that thing ever loud. It was a 16HP Hydrostatic drive. That was a cool "garden tractor". We only had the 12HP 3 speed with a clutch, not near as much fun and I always lost at racing. ;) But the other guy cheated because he could push on the governor and I couldn't because of side panels.

Well, stick one of these or the straight version of one of these (Can't think of the name, nor can I find a picture of it).

And screw a muffler on it. Should cut down on the loudness.
