i have an old school go kart with a 6.5 briggs motor and i was going to get a new sprocket but is the more teeth more top speed or better acceleration

Adding teeth to the rear sprocket slows it down as far as top speed, but would likely accelerate faster. Adding teeth to the front sprocket has the opposite effect.

Pictures would help a lot, but I'm thinking it's a Tecumseh. They're good motors IMO. Briggs likes to integrate carburetors into the fuel tank, I don't much care for that myself. Upload some pictures of the motor and carburetor, that will help identify it to some extent. As to which model it is, Tecumseh made quite a few variants.

and im trying to see what motor is on it all i can see is a 4 and 13 and it says eeze start

Gosh that's an old Tecumseh. Those were around during the 60's if I'm not mistaken. I've always been a Briggs guy myself, but most engines will last forever as long as you take care of them.

Does it look anything like this?

And these would be the decals for it.

That would still be cool to stick on something old.

AHHH NO! Sorry aFremont but I think you are confused here.
To figure gear ratio divide the axle tooth by the clutch tooth. For example:
60/12=5:1 increase Axle to 72..... 72/12=6:1.

A lower number (ratio)gives you less acceleration and higher top speed.

[edit] I apoogize Afremont made a CORRECT statement.

My educated guess is that it's a 5hp.

The engine info (Code, Model, etc) will be here. On the side of the shroud, next to the carb.

It looks like it may have been painted over, making it pretty hard to see anything. Either way, that should work for what you got.

I still stand behind what I said. Increasing the tooth count of the driven (rear wheel) sprocket increases "power" and acceleration, but reduces top speed. Increasing the tooth count of the drive (front, clutch) sprocket increases top speed at the expense of acceleration power.

I don't disagree with your statement though. That is how ratio is calculated. The larger the ratio, the slower the kart, but the faster it gets there. A 20:1 ratio would be dog slow on the top speed, but you could pull wheelies with it. ;)

I don't know much about decoding those model/code numbers, but Google is pretty good at finding matches. ;)

Yeah, that's a B&S engine there I believe. Here is one source of parts, no affiliation yada yada:
https://www.partstree.com/parts/bri...141-99-briggs-stratton-engine-rewind-starter/

There are some other suppliers out there, like e-bay, amazon, jackssmallengines.com etc

I thought B&S called theirs "Easy Start" and Tecumseh used the "Ezee Start" logo, but I could be wrong on that.

I stand corrected. You were also correct my mistake :) I need to read slower I guess

It's a 5hp.

You can make one. You can buy any stock one from Lowes. You can buy a fancy one online. More than likely, you would be able to bolt or screw one in.

I stand corrected. I know how to do this, I guess reading it just gets me confused. This is the second time!:censored: I apologize you are right.:surrender::lolgoku::oops:

LOL on the emoticons No big deal. It happens, I just want to keep the archive straight for future readers. Believe me, I make plenty of mistakes. Just search of the "reverse rotation" thread and see.

Oh yeah, thanks for the link to the suppliers.

Is that opening a pipe thread fitting along with having a 2-bolt flange on the outside?
