though the buttons may serve the purpose to which you(thunderbird) reference, they also serve to keep the cams from eating one another. replacing the spring is not that big a deal. you will need new buttons as well. remove the clip ring and using either a pulley puller or some other method of leverage take the outer cam off. if i remember comet's instructions, once you have the spring in place, push on the outer cam enough to conact the spring. turn the outer cam in the direction which tensions the spring until you catch the very next set of peaks. depending on the spring, will determine the tension you will be dealing with. there are 3 springs for the driven. once you have tensioned the spring past the next set of peaks, push the cam completely on, and re-clip.
