broken Comet torque converter

I blew a spring. Is this something a knob can handle or do I need a small engine repair guy to do it for me? I bought a new spring but in reviewing other posts it seems a bit complicated. See pictures - HELP!

I have a Manco quicksilver 2 x 6 GL with Comet torque converter

looks like you broke the small plastic button of that prevent the two sides from over rotating and thus bent/destroyed your spring. A new set of buttons and a spring is cheap

though the buttons may serve the purpose to which you(thunderbird) reference, they also serve to keep the cams from eating one another. replacing the spring is not that big a deal. you will need new buttons as well. remove the clip ring and using either a pulley puller or some other method of leverage take the outer cam off. if i remember comet's instructions, once you have the spring in place, push on the outer cam enough to conact the spring. turn the outer cam in the direction which tensions the spring until you catch the very next set of peaks. depending on the spring, will determine the tension you will be dealing with. there are 3 springs for the driven. once you have tensioned the spring past the next set of peaks, push the cam completely on, and re-clip.

Whatever you do DONT hit the threads of the jackshaft with a hammer. Youll never get the **** driven off.

You'll also have a tough time removing the flat side/fixed post from the moveable sheave once the snap ring is off if it is at all mushroomed. Do yourself a favor and get a new snap ring too, usually they stretch out and stuff when you cant get them off easily.

since i have mine down for bearing replacement, i will re-install 1 of the bolts in the end, stick the assembly into a vise or whatever with a 3/4 socket (3/4 drive) on the shaft to prevent damage to the fixed sheave as i already bananaed it. all this to install a key, that seems not to matter. on mine anyway

I had the same problem on my son's Manco go kart. I ruined the jackshaft and the sheave strong arming it off. Take it slow and count to 10 if you get mad.

What keeps the outer cam and the pulley together? I have the whole jackshaft out and apart. The driven came off as a piece, outer cam and all.

the clip ring does. when looking at the driven, you should see a steel piece with 2 eyes. you have to have a tool small enough to fit the eye unless you have clip ring pliers. they can be hard to get out. once the c/r is removed, it is a matter of sliding/pulling the cam off of the spindle

The retaining ring is missing. That is part of the reason I took the entire jackshaft and driven off. I didn't know what else was wrong and I didn't want to have to do it twice so I just ordered new spring, spacers, keys, retaining rings etc...

But even thought he retaining ring is missing, the cam is still attached to the Driven pulley. I already have the Driven with Cam off of the jackshaft

i used a small 3 jaw puller to remove mine. can you get a 'dead-on' shot of the driven?

I don't see three springs. I have one. I took the outer cam off, replaced the spring, twisted the outer cam back on and put on one clip (even though I got 2 in the kit...I have no idea why).

i was unclear, there are 3 springs available, only one to be used at a time. there are light, medium and heavy springs to get more bottom end, or topend as we (the users of tav's/tc) so desire.

Similar Issue, yet more dumberer

1. So I understand that I need a new spring (part number 6805) and it also seems as though I need a new Nylon Button (part number 6804). Does that look right?

2. I apologize for my ignorance, but can somebody please explain how to get the Centerlock Hex Jam Nut (part number 1136) off? I don't want to damage anything here and it doesn't seem to come off easily.

3. Not pictured here, but prior to the spring breaking I put a new drivebelt on the torque converter. Whenever I drove the vehicle, tiny pieces of the drivebelt were flung all over......the seatback, the engine, my coat.....to where everything almost had a black tint to it. They were easily wiped off, but I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to do that. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help.....my boys are getting inpatient with my lack of mechanical skills. :mad2:

Reference my #3 issue above.....reading through another post it sounds like there may be an out-of-alignment condition causing accelerated wear on the belt.....thoughts?

If you have a 30 series, you need an asymmetrical belt.

NOT a "V" belt.
