Briggs w/electric start wiring maybe dumb question....

Hey all. Sort of new to this forum AND the briggs motors but here goes...

I have a briggs intek i/c 206 engine with electric start that was given to me. I think the guy monkeyed with it a bit but I don't think it has ever been run.

My question is on the wiring of this motor. It has a single red wire coming out of the motor and I am not sure what it is for?

Also the starter looks like it only has a single post but I'm not sure if this is the positive lead or what. I checked continuity from the post to the block and it is conducting.

I assume the post on the electric start motor is the positive lead that needs to be hooked up via a relay or switch?



Any info would be rad.

I believe that would be correct. The casing of the engine itself would be the negative connection. That red wire should be the one that goes to the battery to crank it. Does it have a solenoid of any sort? Pics might help.

The starter is hoked up with a starter noid.
The wire poking out is probably the alternator wire or a kill wire, pull the cooling tin off and have a look.

Thanks. I'll pull that tin off and have a look. What does the kill wire normally connect to? (maybe dumb question....:huh: )

I don't see a starter solenoid on the starter....Only a single terminal post at the bottom. I am guessing that the single post is the hot side and needs to be hooked up through a relay/noid type switch?

Are the kill switches normally just an open circuit when in the "off" position and connected to ground when in the "on" position?

Normally to kill the engine the switch would be in the "on" position which would ground the ignition coil, Shuting off the engine.

Wire under flywheel=+12v alternator line, engine should have a alternator under the wheel for battery charging. If the wire is attached to the ignition coil its the kill wire, kill them motor by grounding this wire. Starter is engaged with a big relay/solenoid.

Battery +>noid>starter post
................^trigger(apply +12v to crank engine)
Ground is the frame, just run a big line from the batt negative to the frame.

Must admit that I am not using this on a go kart. Its going on the paragliding/hangliding tow winches I build and sell. I mainly use the 6.5hp honda motors but this one is for me and I'm trying to work out an electric start option (which honda doesn't offer on the 6.5hp motors...weird)

If I'm seeing the picture correctly, it is definitely an alternator wire. Notice the black heatshrink tubing just before the plug? This is the diode that rectifies the AC produced by the stator coils (located underneath the flywheel) into pulsed DC for battery charging, lighting, etc.

A word of caution here: these low-amperage alternators are unregulated, meaning their output voltage varies with engine speed, just like the small generator on a bicycle: the faster you go, the brighter the lights (or the higher charge current going back into the battery).

How big the alternator is (how much current it can put out at engine speed of 3600RPM) is another question. The Briggs website is helpful in determining what size your unit is. Usually 1.5 - 5 Amps for engines of this size.
