Also, a BTW for the torque plate doubters. We only honed my block .010 over plus skirt clearance. With the torque plate on, the piston dropped like a stone, but with it off the bore wasn't round enough for it to fit. If we hadn't used the torque plate, it would've been opposite and wouldn't fit properly with the head on.

I lapped the valves in yesterday, and got one spring on. Whoever invented split keepers is an *******.

That's why real engine builders do their boring and honing with torque plates.

Great post.

Cool, Its not hard at all to get split keepers in a flathead if you know the trick. Lay the engine in its side with the spring area straight up towards you. Compress the sping as much as posable with the retainer on. Get a small slot screw driver and dip it in Vaseline. Cover the valve stem in vaseline around the keeper notch. Then put some more vaseline on the screwdriver tip and stick a keeper on the end of the driver and stick it to the valve stem. Do the same for both keepers and its simple and quite fast.

Thats one good idea, i did it the hard way last time, getting it in there with my fingers and 2 flat heads.

I used a magnetic flathead and got in both keepers on one spring, then one keeper on the other before my spring compressor slipped, so now I'm stuck with one retainer. I'm trying to get it out so I can start over, but it's proving to be harder than installing it.

I did get to the store today to pick up some cheap conventional oil for break in, and some Mobil 1 for after.

Yeah, If you get one keeper on and your compressor slips you can get yourself into a jammed up mess espeiclly if there springs with a high seat pressure. Be carefull and take your time.

Keep forgetting to mention I got the keeper unstuck, then proceeded to lose one whilst trying to install them using Tyler's method. FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

How did you manage to lose one? I've never had this much trouble getting them in. You just put some tacky grease on the valve stem and stick the keepers on. Let off spring tension, voila.
