Raptor Racing Engine

Hello everyone,

I just picked up two new (to me) karts. They are both coyote chassis and will be used on an oval dirt track. My question is about the engines that are on both of them. They have raptor racing engines. I don’t know much about these engines as all of my other karts are using the predator 212s with stage 1 kits. Just from testing it out I can tell that the are a lot slower than my other karts with the predators. I know the coyote is a a good chassis but does anyone have any advice on how to get more performance out of the raptors without breaking the bank? Or does anyone know what they would be worth if I just decide to sell and go with the predators? I can’t seem to find much info on the older models online. I’ll post pictures below.

A good first step would be a Mikuni carburetor, then a billet con rod and flywheel, then a cam! Oh wait, I think that broke the bank.......
Raptors are pretty cool engines, and they're reasonably powerful. They look to be geared pretty high....are they lacking in low end grunt or top end speed?

Lol yeah I kinda figured those were some of the things I would get on a reply. For what I will be using these for I’m not really looking to get that involved in the engine. That’s why I have those predators on the other ones. They are cheap and easy to deal with/get replacement parts for. Top speed isn’t too bad it’s lacking low end grunt coming out of the turns and on starts.

You might wanna try a bigger axle sprocket or a smaller clutch sprocket before you sell those engines or whatever you're gonna do with them. Race karts tend to be geared much higher than yard karts, since they spend almost 100% of the time at WOT.

@JTSpeedDemon That is what I worked on this evening. They both had 62 tooth sprockets on them and I changed them to 72 and that made a huge difference. Next will be to most likely upgrade the clutch. Thanks for the help.

Looks like a max torque clutch 14 tooth is currently on it

Try a 12 tooth, they're pretty common. With a 12/72 setup, you should have gobs of torque!

Kudos to keeping those Raptors alive! They're a slowly dying breed unfortunately.

Thanks, I haven’t seen many of the raptors around but I’m a fan of them so far. I have 12 tooth on my other karts so that is what I was thinking about getting but do you think an 11 tooth would be okay?

Haven’t had it on a straight away at all just on a small dirt oval track. We turn about 8 second lap times on it but it is still bogging out of the turns a little bit with the 14 tooth clutch.

Well... got new clutch on and everything hooked up and pulled about 8 times with no start. Then the engine completely locked up. Pull start won’t move at all. Any ideas of what the issue could be on this ?

Check the recoil...
Pull the plug out, and see if that is a problem..

Is there a decompression release on this type of engine???

No recoil, I tried pulling plug out and pulling and no luck. Also, there isn’t a decompression release that I’m aware of on this. It’s a Briggs raptor 3 engine.

The recoiling pull start is shown above...Is that not a current picture of it??? or do you use a separate racing electric starter???

It has a recoiling pull start on it, the picture above is current. I just meant that the recoil wasn’t the problem. I took the pull start off and it pulled and recoiled fine off the engine. Tried turning the motor with adjustable and it’s definitely locked up.

Man that's too bad, hopefully it's nothing TOO major and is something stupid like a broken piston ring. Those motors are cool as heck I've been hoping to come across one myself.

Its easy to take the head and side cover off do it and it will save you many headaches
