The one thing I'm not a fan of with flatheads:
The starter assembly!!!
One time my starter flew apart, and I screwed up about 4 springs trying to put it back together!
Then I found out I was trying to put it together wrong, because the PO put it together wrong.

Yeah, I'm kinda with BGK here, I think you should just clearcoat the engine and LET IT SHINE!
You can't see it very well, but in the picture, I've sanded my tie rods with 60 grit sandpaper to give it an almost chrome/stainless steel look!
I still need to clearcoat it, though....

OldStrattonMan, what does the inside of the blower housing look like? They're always unpainted and rusty inside in my experience. Don't look! You'll be tempted like me into sanding and wire-wheeling it clean and painting it. I don't like active rust one bit. Plus if it's smooth in there, it helps with cooling, you know.

...what if i stripped parts like you did and clear coated them that would be awesome!

I think carsandcameras did a "DeLorean go kart" by leaving the frame bare metal and clear coating it to mimic stainless steel.

I say nay, don't do it.

Yeah, then you don't have to get a new crankshaft, and even then, the 8 horse could still be a smoker or something. Plus the 5 horse will bolt right up to the Yerf Doge.

So while I'm still waiting on parts to come in and painting, in the mean time I have noticed that they sell different jets for the pulsa jet carb. I keep going back to I'm not going to have enough fuel when I get this thing finished, has anyone ever purchased any of the jet kits and if so is it just kind of finding the jet that works best?

Most people I know just drill them out --by hand with a pin vise and a micro drill bit set.
But yeah, you could buy an assortment of jets.

Otherwise, the answers you seek don't reside here. I'd go to Bob's Karting Forums (4cycle.com) and find out what jet is best for your setup and pump gasoline.

Since you're removing the governor and won't be using the old throttle setup (which was actually connected to the governor), you'll need an alternative setup...

I recommend the Raptor throttle bellcrank that goes over the top of the blower. Like this one:

Hellion thanks for that info on Bob's Karting, and that is the same throttle kit I purchased except I paid more going through OMB.

For anyone that will be doing work on these ol Briggs or rebuilding them here is pics and descriptions. I have to say these tools will save time and make your job alot smoother.

Well that $70 is a lot better than kicking yoself because your valve assembly flew apart and you scored your cylinder wall!

Here is pics of some of the parts I've received and the part numbers. I searched Ebay and found the best prices for new old stock items that do the same thing as a brand new part and who don't like saving money.

Intake and exhaust valves
Standard ring set
Complete gasket set

I also compare prices between OEM and NOS parts.
I find the part number at Outdoor Power Direct, then I look up on Ebay and Amazon "Briggs and Stratton ________".
Then I compare prices for Ebay and Amazon, and pick the best one obviously.
I've been able to find some pretty darn obscure parts that way.

Been wanting to get that starter clutch remover, but in the meantime I have been using a very large set of Channel Loc pliers with padded jaws. They work a treat.

There's also a large tool or brace that stops the flywheel from turning while you use the starter clutch remover...I should have that too matter of fact.


Maybe you can give us an itemized list of what you're planning to do with this engine, along with your parts stash so we don't waste your time with stuff you already know about?

Then all we have to do is sit back and eat popcorn...

you can use a honda gx200/clone pull start, just put a honda gx200/clone cup behind the flywheel nut and drill some holes in the existing shroud. I have done that before on my tecumseh, and it worked out great. I saw that a guy did that to his briggs 5 hp flathead as well and it worked.

Made time to finish removing everything from the block and from the looks of everything it looks to be in very good shape. The crank and bushings are nice and smooth and piston doesn't look to bad either. Overall these engine's are simple to work on. Take alot of pictures while disassembling everything and label all the bolts and it will be just as easy going back together I hope. I'm spending alot more time than I expected trying to clean it up and paint I'm just trying to get it as clean as possible. I'm still struggling very badly at getting the grime out the fins on the block so please feel free to give me all the advice so can on how you clean the blocks. Well another week gone so see yall back on Monday I hope and enjoy the weekend.
