I wouldn't. You'll be heading for a very painful object when that cable snaps, rendering you dead. Go get a brake cable from a motorcycle or similar, or an emergency brake cable from a car. You can also use 1/8" or 3/16" aircraft cable if you can find a suitable sheath/conduit.

Bike as in bicycle? You really want to trust yer arse to that? Please bear in mind you're going a lot faster with a lot more weight behind you. Seems silly to die that way. Your call. Tell Darwin I said, "Howdy!".

What about some kind of acuater cable?

There thick and stout.

Like something for engaging a clutch or locking something in and out of four wheel drive.

Or a transmission shifter cable of a big vechile?

no, but if you attached some roller chain to the brake caliper(on swing arm) and to the brake rod(on main frame) it would work but you would need to put some sort of guide on it, a heavy duty brake cable would be easier though.

See, the big problem with rods, mechanical linkages, and other cocammamie chain things, is that as the suspension flexes, the physical distances between brake pedal and brake itself changes. Basically the connection will be tightening and slackening as you travel over the terrain. Tightening will cause your brake to actuate itself. Not wanted. Slacking off will mean having to push the pedal further than you may anticipate, possibly not far enough with a pedal stop in place. So- insufficient/ no braking, and/or self-braking, all randomly changing moment by moment over the terrain. Sound like a good idea to you? Just use a good cable.

EDIT- Gokart, why don't you post up some pics of your setup? Perhaps that will help make things a little more clear. Also- What was used before, and why are you unwilling to track down a good cable?
