I suppose it depends on how picky you want to be. The U-bolts don't look horrible from here, and probably don't warrant replacement.

i wouldnt bother replacing any of that stuff

if it were a car id say replace the bushings but its only a small trailer

the bolts look good as do the springs

hell those bolts have hexagonal heads and are still the origonal diamiter
u should see some of the trailers getting around our farm

we have one 1 tonne car trailer that was free
it is almost completely rusted out but it has carryed 3 tonne of hay bails for a long time now
we will just use it till it fallls apart

Went down to BCF and bought some trailer lights, didn't have the money to go LED so 12v globes it is.

You didn't check ebay, did you: you can get half decentLED tail lights for as little as $10

Found some old lights that were on my tinny trailer and i have decided to copy the design to carry my lights on the sides. For this i need to cut up some angle. I hope someone understands from the photo what i am trying to do. i just can't work out how to cut the other angle on my drop saw.

Will i have to use the hacksaw and do it by hand?

If you're trying to make a frame by creating 4 90* bends, yes, hacksaw or grinder with a cutting disc.

Any advice that will speed up finishing the trailer is greatly appreciated.

Work faster :D

...the springs. should i just give them a coat of primer and replace the bolts? what about the large U bolts should i replace those as well?

Hit them with a wire cup on a grinder then coat them with underbody sealer.

If any bolts look sus, replace them on both sides (meaning, if only one looks bad, replace the one on the other side anyway).

Replacing the U bolts can be tricky. If they're realy bad, first, find replacements (it's harder than it sounds) & replace them one at a time! This will help to maintain the axle alignment.

ground back the paint and then covered it in some primer.

Nice. It looks a lot better than in the beginning hey?

I just scored myself a trailer from my dad. It is pretty rusted up. I will probably start a thread of my own when I get down to making her purty. Tere seem to be a lot of trailers getting fixed up

The problem with the one I just got is that it doesn't open at the back, and it is too small for my toys to fit in it. They would have to go on top.:( :worried2:

:funnypost::lolgoku:

Step 1] Load up on cutoff wheels for the grinder and/ or blades for the sawzall. Even better; break out the gas ax!!!!

Step 2] Remove sides from trailer.

Step 3] Purchase steel for the frame extensions.

I could go on, but you get the gist of it.....

Now.:backtotopic::popcorn:

I will, I will. :surrender:  :D

I just have to make some time for this. I will probably only start looking at it in the new year

Haha I didn't even see these last few posts up until now!

We have a similar issue landuse haha I put my kart together and it is too wide and won't fit in haha :'(

Working on my kart at the moment but I will keep this thread going while I finish the trailer. we need to get a piece of square rhs and slide it over the existing round to make the draw bar longer

It will be bolted through in several places and welded at the end, can anyone see any issues with this idea before I go and spend the money on the rhs

RTA? Whazzat? Motor Vehicles department?

Yep roads and traffic authority

-well the trailer is 6ft long and current drawbar is about 1ft and I plan to make it 4ft

I don't think anyone will know how its done unless they inspect it in great detail but chances are it will hardly be used. Might even sell it and find something bigger.

Seriously? It looks longer than that in the early pics...

IMO, What you're better off doing is source a 3' length of pipe/round tube the same as the draw bar & a 5' length of pipe that fits snugly inside it. Put the longer length inside the drawbar so that it extends back beyond the front wall, plug weld it in place behind the wall & fillet weld it at the end of the larger pipe.

Now slide the other section over the smaller diameter pipe & weld it in place at both ends. A few more plug welds & some fancy finishing & no one will ever know.

Yeah it was longer but we cut the end off.

Yeah that was the original plan but I can't get the round tube the same size or one that will fit inside, that's why we have turned to rhs.

They had some to match the outside piece although it had a different wall thickness and you cant buy it in a length Smaller than 3.2m

Hi Nice trailer

I'm pretty sure you and your Dad will get that trailer sorted out by the looks of what you have done so far!

I have two suggestions:

1. I'd get some 100x6 mm about 100mm long and put it under the draw bar as a stiffner (on edge) weld a strip of 40x6mm along the top of that like a flat spine continued to the trailer hitch and also back under the trailer like a shallow triangle (the deeper/ steeper the triangle the stronger it will be, but keep it sensible). This would make the single draw bar very strong if you centre the 100x6 mm triangle peak under where the draw bar comes out of the trailer.

2. The springs etc look fine in the photo's all you need to do with them is soak them (brush it on) with Diesel and sump oil mixed together, to lube them and then you and your dad to jump up and down in the trailer a bit to work it in. DONT put any on the rubber bushes! and do it on the lawn! and wipe them down with a rag to soak up the excess. Probably best not to leave it parked over clean cement for a while, you dont want drip marks!

Keep up the good work!
