Yes thats the truth, however i dont want to take any shortcuts with this project, it displays what we do, and how well i can do it, so if i remake that rear motor bracket and get the tig onto the frame, i should have it done in no time, i still have to mock up the jackshaft, but since there is gobloads of room behind the engine it probabley wont take much to get this thing running on its own steam!!

Cheers for comments = )

Next door has a sandblasting cabinet

I dont give a rats about the purist's, the reality is it never was a willys, the mould may have been based around one but nothing on it is willys.

and who the heck would even want a flathead in thier steelbodied one anyway!?

point and jeer and laugh, but at the end of the day this will smoke any conventional yank v8 street rod is what the guy who owns it says.

got some more pics will tooto with them and upload in a minute

Pre - oiling the crank assembly

Crank assembled

Piston assembled and barrel gasket cut

Barrel assembled

Carburettor, pulley and sparkplug connected

have yet to reassemble the maneto backing plate, with its high tension lead, and have yet to paint the pull start cap plate and engine mounts.

Has plenty of compression!!!

Ive been trying to think of a way of covering the spark plug lead, something nostalgic in the time period kinda, as the lead is pretty hi tech looking, any ideas fullas?

yeh you could find an old style plug lead on an old reel mower. Had a few mowers at the whangarei rubish dump about a month ago when i was up there. edit: come to think of it i've even seen victas with that type of cover over the lead and they are easy to find

engines looking awesome man. Did you get new rings? been thinking of getn some rings made for a matchless engine i have. But should try to find a frame to put it in first ha.

currently on the hunt for a villiers reel mower myself. Have an old morrison one with a tecumseh engine and a cent clutch. Might use that but i dislike 4 stokes lol

Thanks guys, ive spent quite a bit of time on this motor, its a lifetime investment.

Did you get new rings?

Nah, they were mint - they are 3mm in width!? two of them, they were over oiled really at a mix of 10/12.1 so you dont usually have to replace them, such a trojan motor.

Theres a guy next door that may have another motor identical!, now two on the bike would be awesome! but lets wait and see.

Doubt i wil lget anything done till the weekend, swap meet on saturday so yeah :/

Thanks guys

Hi Cam,
Just joined to see your build and to tell you that you are not alone. One of our forum members in Oz is building a Mk1 Villiers bike and told us about you building your bike.

I live in Canada on the Pacific coast in British Columbia and I purchased a Mk1 in the U.S. just before Harry in Oz posted his bike on the forum.
My friend (Silverbear on our forum) picked it up for me since it was 4 hours away from him and he is using it to mock up his build.
I'll see him in about 6 weeks and we will spend the summer building two simular Indian motorcycle builds. These will both use Villiers Mk1 motors.
I purchased a second motor in England and had it sent to a Villiers repairer over there since parts here don't exist.

You have a first rate build going on and I would like to invite you to join our band of merry tinkerers and we will most certainly be watching your build.

We are at Motorized Bicycles.com. We cover gas and electric builds.
You will find Harry76's bike at the DIY Home Built Motorized Bicycle (non kit) thread.

I have a restored 1952 Monark bike with a sidecar I built that I am taking apart to rebuild.

Thank you,

Steve. (fasteddy)

Silverbear here. I also just signed up in order to follow your build. I'm in northeastern Minnesota along the border with Ontario, Canada. When i saw Harry's Villiars build I was smitten at first glance. What a nice looking motor even in and antique, encrusted state. Yours is something else, a lovely thing, looking better than it ever did leaving the factory. I found your adaptation of the crank of interest, since we share the same problem. We are also planning to use a jack shaft and belt drive to a rear wheel sheave. Thanks for sharing, Mate.

Thanks guys, ill take up your offer to join the forum, really appreciate the comments!

I am very interested in the mk 1 villiers bike, and i will be onto that fairly pronto, expect a lot of questions!

Yes the adaption came after a long cup of tea, i didnt really want to butcher the ancient motor, but after i thought about it, they made millions, and im sure someone has done worse!

Unless you have the actual pulley or clutch off the mower to use, its almost impossible to machine a tapered boss or pulley because the taper is so slight, bear in mind i also tried using a colechester apprentice fitted with a taper cutter for doing slight tapers, the angle is around 1.95 degrees i think, which is rather annoying!

When i machined it i did not use much speed at all, probabley not even 300 rpm, it was very slow because i ddnt want the conrod to let go! and i think once you made the third cut the work hardening had gone and it made a nice finish, the end result was a shaft with the diameter of about 16.70 millimetres, perfect for a small pulley, also the thread is a villiers special, with a 9/16 size shaft and a strange pitch, so thats why i had to change it.

The springs are for my nissan sentra, which i will put on next week.

Thanks guys!
