Axle Collars shifting inward

After I cleaned up the go kart from our mud bath yesterday I noticed the rear wheels were really close to the swing arm. I looked and the collars that the hold the wheels out had slid inboard.

The axle kit I bought is a single thickness all the way. So it uses collars to keep the wheels from sliding in board. The collars use two set screws to keep them in place. I previously tightened those set screws down REALLY tight. I was concerned about messing up the Allen head set screws. So what do I do to keep the collars in place?

I thought about staking the set screws in place, but they go below the face of the collars. Buy longer set screws and then stake them with a chisel?

I thought about lock tight the set screws, but I really haven't had good experience with lock tight, maybe I'm using it wrong...

I thought about putting the collar in place, tighten one set screw down. Remove the other set screw and drilling a dimple into the axle for the set screw to sit in. Then, doing the same process for the other set screw. But, I'm worried about the drill bit messing up the threads in the collar. I would use a drill bit quite a bit smaller than the hole. But, I'm worried about the drill bit wandering due to trying to drill into a round axle.

What's the best way to keep the collars in place?

I've had some stay forever and some come loose everyday.
I found they stay put when using small bolts and lock nuts instead of set screws, if you got room for the head of the bolt.
I had a sprocket hub keep coming loose so I used 2 lock nuts, and it finally stayed.
As for marking for drilling dimples, take set screws out and any rattle can paint, put collar where you need it, a quick shot down the holes will give you a good mark to drill.

You already know the best way, ya just said it. Just have to move the collars as to not honk up the threads. BTW locktite only works on clean oil/grease free parts. Including Denny's favorite yak grease.
Also a center drill is a nice way to avoid the wandering drill syndrome!

Awesome, you guys rock. I think im gonna use a center drill bit to dimple the axle and then replace the set screws with grade 8 bolts and lock washers.

I'm not liking the grade 8 bolt idea. I jus used bolts outta the bins. I don't use lock washers. Jus tighten the bolts down to axle, snug enough to stay but not enough to break or strip. Then run the nut down to collar and lock it down so bolt don't back out.
I found some collars had different threads, so off to the hardware store.......AGAIN.

Just be careful sticking a grade 8 bolt in a grade zero collar. Over tighten it and the threads in the collar are gone. no real benefit to a grade 8 bolt in this application anyway.

I’m with Kevin on this one put in tubular spacers. If I absolutely have to use lock collars I use the split kind where you have to tighten the 2 Allen head bolts. Never had luck with the set screw kind.
I saw the two piece split collars at the hardware store, they work better than the set screw solid collar ones?

Put in the tube sleeves inside. If you are using a collar be it split or not to hold the wheel on I'd drill and tap the center of the axle (3/8" should do it) and install a bolt and washer there to keep the collar from coming off which would allow the wheel to come off causing injury, death, destruction and worst case scenario embarrassment.

All my mancos that aren't running stepped wheels have sleeves. Works good enough. Only issue I had with them moving like that was actually a bearing issue.
