Are these engine, wheel hub, and rims saveable?

Ok I don't have many pictures but I have A few videos I will link at the bottom.

First off my briggs 5hp's ENTIRE cylinder wall us scored so badly it leaks oil into the cylinder slightly also it had a lot of Carbon buildup. It was run to almost no oil by the previous owner so it really isn't suprising at all. I'm just suprised that it didn't smoke badly when it was running. Although when I drove with this engine it felt sluggish and guessed it was the carb but it was definitely low compression.

Also I have some cast aluminum manco 4inch and a manco 5inch cast rim that are broken in many places I'll get some nice pictures of everything later.

And my wheel hub is missing chunks and I would love to know where to buy another

If the wheels and hubs are missing chunks, they're far beyond saving.:(
You're gonna have to save up and buy some good ones.
I like www.ombwarehouse.com for parts.
As for the scoring, the one solution I can think of is BIG BORE!!:stir:

have you access to a honing tool?
Without knowing how bad exactly the scoring is.. it's hard to tell,
but sometimes a honing pass or two and oversized pistonrings (not piston yet!)
might do the trick.. of at least improving by a noteworthy amount.

But a honing head is likely as expensive as a good 5horse briggs,
so you'll need the tool or know one that you can borrow it from ...
Piston rings are not too expensive, but not free either of course.
There is no free solution at all I'm afraid.

In fact chances are you will need an oversize piston really and a full rebore of the cylinder if the scoring is really bad.. and then you most likely find a better running flathead for less.
especially since w/o oil conrod/crank and essentially every other moving part is also affected by excessive wear...

I've JB welded Manco rims, Kelly did.. and so did many others before us..
for a small patch (like say just the bead collar)
I don't see much of an issue so far..
I reinforced the seam with some steel pins (needles really)
if that made any difference I can't tell .. it upped my confidence a hair though ;)

but larger chunks I'd say are not fixable...
A talented and trained TIG welder might be able to find a matching filler rod and get it back..
but again.... it's likely cheaper to find a new rim half instead.

Not too many good news I'm afraid :(

PS what wheel hub?
Ill take a picture later I get out of school around 2:30 my time it's currently 1. The rims I can epoxy or jb weld but it's nothing that stops me from driving my go kart it's just the edges. And the engine is just not worth repairing this engine I can find a new block or donor for cheap so it's fine I'll take pictures while I have my engine apart.

That's normal carbon buildup by the way. That's what all cars have, that aren't factory new and still sitting on the semi truck trailer.


Even though your camera can't focus for crap, that cylinder scoring doesn't look half as bad as I expected. I wouldn't say it was starved for oil--I'd say it was allowed to breathe dirt in, either through a missing filter, vacuum leak or a compromised filter. That's mainly what scores the cylinder.


Take some pics....of the actual items in question. :rolleyes:

It's been raining for the past few days don't have a workshop or garage to open an engine up under.

Usually a scored up cylinder wall results in gas leaking into the oil more than oil leaking into the cylinder, at least at first. That is, until the crankcase is way overfull with diluted gassy oil, which can then find its way into the cylinder quite easily. This contaminated oil doesn't lubricate as well, increasing the wear on the cylinder wall, as well as the rod bearing, journal, crank bearings, camshaft, etc.

Honing the cylinder *might* help, but it's a bit of a hail Mary if it's been run like that for any length of time.
