I'm in the process of tearing apart one of my live axle karts. I have a Manco Dingo that's presently vexing me to no end. It has the famed hex axle and while one wheel came free after impact-wrenching the wheel nut off (the only real issue), the other one has become "one" with the axle shaft.
I've been dosing it daily, hourly with a steady diet of Liquid Wrench (let's save the debate on penetrating fluid for later) to basically no avail. I was going to try a blowtorch to heat the hub but...
...got an idea to try my heat gun. I didn't wanna destroy the factory gold paint on the wheel or heat it so much it affected the steel's temper, which the blowtorch no doubt would do. So I heat the hub for several minutes taking care to avoid the axle poking through and then pound it with my BFH.
It was starting to move, finally, albeit slowly. Heat, hammer and douse it with Liquid Wrench seems to be working but it is far from an ideal situation. In wheel pic #2, you can see the wheel has been coming up as less threads are visible. By this writing, I have hammered the end of the axle flush with the hub. And there it remains...

The moral of the story is use this:
