Welding is part of the fun! Taught the boys to weld today it was awesome. They laid down some serious beads:wai: It will be cool when it's done and it won't take too long to fix that. Do you have a mig at the house?

Those guys look like they been having some serious good times!

Yea, I have a Hobart 210 MVP.

It's fun to play with it. Just too hot here lately. High 90s low 100s in the shade. Top that off with safety gear and have to be inside my hot garage to stay out of the wind to keep a good stable shielded arc and you get the pic. I really have to be in the mood to do it. My wife will be back at work Wed so the garage will be open. I am thinking I will be able to drag the Beach Bumb in there then...that name don't even flow...I gotta come up with something else.

Grinding out the old welds are gonna suck cause I wont be able to get any tools in to the areas real easily. I'll figure something out I guess.

I want to ride that kart. I cant believe the POs were riding it like that.

Nice hopefully it's a little cooler on Wednesday for you that is hot!! We have been the older they get the more fun we get to have! I use a grinder most of the time to clean up but In The hard spots a lot of times I'll use a drill with some different wire brush attachments.

I did drag out the welder today...it's done. I'm not happy about the appearance of the welds but I feel comfortable that the welds aren't going anywhere. The very first arc blew a dime sized hole right through the existing welds and metal as soon as I touched the trigger. I had to turn the machine way down to get it to work without blowing holes in the frame. I had the settings right. Maybe the metal was just weak around the prior welds and rewelds. I am guessing maybe that's why the frame gave way like it did. I don't know.

I'm not a welder nor do I claim to be...

this is the first crack

IMG_20190617_175312348.jpg

And the welds layered up on top of each other and where I tried to fill in the holes. Not so easy. I decided to just put down a lot of metal around and on top of the crack in hopes to beef up the area, not to mention I burned away quite a bit of the rusted metal below. Oh well, it wasn't doing any good anyway.

on the other side was where the frame attached and the brake brace came together, not as bad but I did a little build up there as well, it was hard to get the mig gun in and around where I needed it thanks to the seat back being welding in place :(

IMG_20190617_182509604.jpg

Last but not least, I just kinda put a little bit of metal on top of the crack that was around the engine mount, I didn't feel the need to reweld the entire thing, just beef up around the place where it cracked

IMG_20190617_185515387.jpg

I know real welders could have done way better, but I think these will hold. If they brake I'll just be back where I started and I'll just try again...

But tomorrow...God willing and the creeks dont rise...I should be riding this thing!

I think those welds will do fine. They don't have to look pretty to be strong

I agree, nice job Wes! It is very easy to burn through the tubing if the settings are too high but it looks you figured it out! I had a feeling you weren't going to wait until Wednesday:thumbsup:

Thanks, when I was going to diesel mechanic school I learned to torch weld but I was young and my first experience with the stick welder went bad real fast. I was a poor kid back in those days and I didn't own a pair of boots, just tennis shoes...I promptly set those on fire and burnt my feet. That was over 30 years ago. I still haven't really messed with one. The MiG is fun. I'd love to take some classes and learn to do it right. I've probably maybe got a total run time of maybe half an hour on the machine. For the most part it seems to take care of itself if the settings and the gas is right. It actually feels a lot like torch welding. But way faster and hotter.

I actually put down those big welds on purpose. I was trying to do that and cover the spider cracks and holes and previous undercut. I was hoping I could do that so I could get away without gussets. Time will tell.

I seen a video where a guy was using a flexible mig gun. Wonder if Hobart has one.

Aggravating son of a...

If it ain't one thing it's another...

I was doing a dry run on the stands when it broke and slung the chain. I knew I should have cut a new chain I just hate doing it cause it's a pain in my ***...but now I'm going to any way.

Arrrrrrggggg that ****es me off.

All I got left to do is finish bolting down the wheels, the throttle cable, and now a new chain, oh and find a cotter key for the brakes I rebuilt from spare parts...and then just hope this collection of junk works!

But for now I need a break!

I finished putting it together after a short break. Of course one of the rear tires wouldn't hold air so I slimed it. I took it around the block a few times and found a few more issues. I'm going to have to take the driver pulley apart and see what's going on with that.

Front wheels are wobbling like ****. So I have a lot more to do.

But here it is in the backyard after I got home with the boat seat it came with.

Careful now, it's quite possible to rev the engine and drivetrain at faster speeds on jack stands than it would ever attain on the ground. On the ground you have driver's weight, rolling resistance (drag), aerodynamic drag and other factors to overcome.

Your chain just might have been on its last legs anyway. Did it let go on a master link or on a regular section of chain?

Pretty scary. Don't do that no mo' !

Master link....

I had gotten a bag from TSC. Honestly the entire bag was sketchy. That was the last one I think. It wasn't the first to fail either.

I wasn't running it full throttle. Didn't have tires on it either. Didn't want it to come loose and fall and drive through a wall...that would really be stupid. The chain just fell off. The link left out and went to the road. I recovered it and tossed it in the trash.

It's all good. I had a new box of chain. Sometimes it is just easier to rule out all questions. So I did.

A few notes and afterthoughts.

After riding this kart for the first time.

I noticed the following.

The seat guards or whatever you call the things should have never been cut off. That was stupid. As simple as those things are they add a lot as far as keeping a guy from sliding sideways out of the kart...or at least feels that way. I'm going to fit another pair somehow.

Next...that small deep dish steering wheel is trash. It's gotta go.

As with all my Ken-Bar examples the pedals are substandard at best.

I hate tie rod ends!

And last but not least turf saver tires...WTF? All the used things I buy has this trash on there. I hate these cheap *** tires...

When I get home from work I will show my throttle linkage...it is in it's infant stage and I have plans for it... it's not done.

Wait till you really start riding it. You’ll brake all kinds of parts. It’s just part of it. I’m ordering new parts all the time.

Yup, I just wanted to have something other than the Murray Explorer running while I was working on the Beast.

I'll fiddle with this one all along. It's awful to think the PO claimed this thing was in good running shape when it absolutely wasn't.

The sprocket was worn out with needle point teeth and bent. No pads on the brake. Frame cracked through on both sides and the corner of the engine mount. The jackshaft plate was bubbajacked all to h3ll. And the engine wouldn't idle. Tie rod ends loose and throttle cable rusty. Bent rims up front and I can go on...

Well now, that was unexpected. I took it around the block again but this time I used the app on the phone to check the speed. Chinese clone Tab 30series TC, whatever they call it. 10t drive sprocket pushing 54t two piece sprocket on the axle with 18 inch tires. I found a happy spot where I really didn't feel comfortable pushing any faster due to the wobbling front wheels and poor leverage with the tiny steering wheel. Not to mention the boat seat sliding all over the place.

I backed out of it knowing it would go faster, but I was only wearing gloves for safety. Not enough.

This thing has potential to haul some serious @ss. Just don't know if it's worth the risk.

Anyway, after the 2 mile lap the speed app had me locked in at 45 mph. I knew it was moving out the first time I rode it...but I didn't want to make a premature guess as to the speed.

And here also is a requested pic of the throttle linkage, it isn't done yet. I'm gonna make a better bracket for the engine mount and one for the pedal rod...this is just a start.
