My buddy was still out in the garage drinking like he usually does. I already went inside when he calls me to bring out $2 for the mini bike he just purchased. I knew it was a piece of junk when he said $2, but I really had no idea this is what I would see. The guy said it was in a basement full of water. I wonder how bad the frame actually may be.

The smell may keep me from finding out.

That is pretty bad. But I watched my friend fix a 1970 something honda enduro dirt bike that was in his uncle's flooded basement. He went through a lot of WD40 and other various agents for part cleaning, soaking, and de-rusting. That bike is now running with all original parts......

If anything you might be able to salvage some parts and sell those on ebay. It looks vintage and hard to find parts can generate $$to the right person. Search for #'son frame and motor to help i.d. it.

soak it in CLR bath tube full of it and let it sit for a week wait make that a year lol. You should open up the engine and see if it still is in working order outside might be crud but just like mine 14 years in the rain and weather mine still works i took a wire brush to it and boom looks new again

Ok....As usual. ...I have a different way of looking at things.....

I say.....look at it and imagine that was dear old dad's....and it's the only thing you have left of him. ....wouldn't you want to restore that with as many original parts as possible to as original condition as possible? .????

Sooooooooo.......it's not....but. .....you don't have to succeed in a restoration on this one. ....but it's a good learning tool ....should the day ever come around when you need to get it right the first time.....then you will be more ready.......

that frame... is it just me or does the Swingarm mount look like the one on a 1969 Rupp Roadster (as does the rest of the frame except the fork)

*shrugs*

Going to check how bad the frame is this weekend. If it doesnt look too bad I may start tearing it down. May even try to remove the rust with electrolysis. If I do decide to restore I will make up a build thread.

Since those bolts are going to be very well rusted, if you attempt a restoration buy some ATF transmission fluid and some acetone and mix it with a 50/50 ratio. That will work better than any of the store bought penetrating oils like Kroil, liquid wrench, pb bplaster. Here's one test, but others can be found. Obviously it's nasty stuff, so gloves and a proper respirator are just common sense. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182271

Should we really assume everyone here knows or remembers or has even read everything that's ever been said here? Madness, I say! That is useful info and I bet someone that's never heard of it read it because it's in a recent post/thread. Do not take what I say as being a jerk. While in fact I may be one, I'm just sayin'. Thanks for the welcome :)

I do not think Fabroman was meaning anything bad by what he said. Sometimes humour does not come over well on the internet

Get a kiddie pool and fill it with whatever preferred solution and soak frame. Motor, hard saying if itll ever run again. Depends how bad the internals are, along with the carburetor

I'd strip that frame, clean the obvious crud of it, then tap it all over with the shank of a heavy screwdriver. You can hear where the rust is about to come all the way through the metal (IF it is). The perimeter of any welded area will be most likely to fail. Clink, clink, clink, clunk, - clunk is bad. Push on it with the edge of the screwdriver and it may cave in. At that point, it's a good mailbox candidate, or a pattern for a new frame.
