A "cool" idea?

yes, I've been looking at that site for days actually, I just realized I could use a milk jug, freeze the bottom half then top it off just as I hit the road, if I make a good mount for it, then I know if need be, I could just get a gallon jug of water from anywhere- plug and play

Why not just get an electric pusher fan, hook it up in front of the radiator and be set? Seems like cheaper and less of a hassle than a water misting system. No need for extra water and can be setup with a thermostat switch and/or a toggle switch.

3 years ago rats ate my windshield washer hose. It was an easy fix.
Anyway, It is easy to tap into the hose with plastic tees, and I mentioned add a couple on off valves you can decide where to send the water spray by opening or closing the valves. I assume you need to cool the radiator in Summer therefore it is not raining. You can just open and close the valves as needed at the gas station on your way out of town with the trailer.
I am just thinking fast simple and cheap.
I too appreciate the other options here.

But yeah my plan sucks if you have my system switched to Radiator and then drive through a swarm of bugs and need to clean the windshield.

Cooling or freezing the water will not help. The reason the water cools the radiator is it is evaporating. Warm even Hot or cool or Cold will all work for what you want. Remember earlier in this thread someone even mentioned getting the Alcohol mix windshield wash, that was for better evaporation qualities as well.

BS....are you REALLY trying to tell me that the temperature of the cooling liquid is IRRELEVANT?

Hot water cools as fast as cool......Hmmmmmm......:rolleyes:

Believe it or NOT.
Ice water will boil faster than hot water on the stove top!
So Yes, that is what I am trying to tell you.
It is not the water that helps cool the radiator, it is the "latent heat" of the evaporation of said water.

Won't the water still evaporate and cause that magical cooling effect eventually?

In the meantime....when I'm overheated...I'll take a cold washrag over one that's 180° (underhood temp....)

Yes. Cold water or Hot water will cool the fins. and Do the "Magic"
It is not the Water that is "cooling" the radiator It is the "evaporation" that is "removing" the heat.
The water is stealing the Heat energy for evap. Removing heat not cooling. There is no such thing cool only the absence of heat.

The cooling of the radiator water/cooling inside the rad. Is a different type of cooling than the Atmospheric evap cooling. The water in the radiator would in fact boil (evap) if it was not a sealed system. Do you know the reason for a typical 21lb Rad cap? by pressurizing the system it gives the Water a higher boiling point. Water boils at 212° and Ethylene Glycol at only 197°. Pure water will actually cool an engine in hotter temps for longer periods before overheating. Since internal engine temps are in the 500° range 210° water will keep the engine cool enough. Besides an engine actually must be warm to run. Ever see a trucker in Canada with a tarp over the radiator?

And I prefer a cool clothon the back of my neck over a 180° one too. LOL

Well....yes...I understand what you are saying and what you are thinking...but....if you put cold water on a radiator....you are cooling down EVERYTHING....allowing heat to transfer through both the coils and fins without relying on evaporative cooling....(which will happen PDQ anyway) ....

No way it's not more effective!

I am not gonna GAB it up anymore. I am too lazy to do that much research and anything more would be guessing. but...
I wonder what the surface temp of a hot radiator is. I do not see a squirt of water actually cooling it down more, just cause the squirted water is 50° compared to 95°. You see the freeway speed air and the fan are causing it to evaporate so quickly regardless.

I dunno it is science.

funny.. I think you're both correct.. you can cool the radiator with nearly boiling water very effectively.. but ONLY down to the temperature of the water you're applying;

so if you need to cool your radiator (and thus your coolant) down by more than a degree or two.. cold water will do that better (but NOT faster)
since it first absorbs some of the heat before it get's to cool by evaporation..

Truth is, we talk about fractions here considering the amount of water that you should (or could) apply to the radiator.
You wouldn't want to drop a bucket of ice water on a boiling hot radiator anyways (it could crack and leak because of such stunt)

Anyways with miniscule amounts of water the temperature of it isn't too important,
with all the air passing by even cold water evaporates quickly, but still a hair slower than hot water and it's the evaporation that does indeed most of the job.

So yes, you're both correct on this IYAM; but if it's really hot (ambient) and your car's really overheating, applying cold water might still give you an advantage.

I don't see why the water should be colder than ambient temperature to be honest, since you wouldn't want to cool the engine below that anyways,
but if you spray just enough to damp the radiator even for a split second, there will be heat absorbed before the water evaporates (which -again- indeed does most of the cooling)
but since cold water can absorb more heat than hot water that might be beneficial,
also you need to apply more hot water than cold water to do so, since hot water evaporates quicker ;)

So I guess the difference will be that with iced water you will be left with a pint wheras with ambient temp water you'll spray the full gallon...
I doubt that's noteworthy difference (but it still is ;))

Misting system is installed and is barely noticeable through the grill. There are 2 misters on each transmission cooler. I need to get on the freeway to make some trial passes but I'm in no rush. The pump is wired to the fuse block through a relay. A momentary switch in the cab activates the relay.
