A "cool" idea?

Can you expect any engine to get decent mpg while towing? My 5.4 would get 11-14mpg towing in my 1999 F150. My dad's 1990 GMC K1500 would get 8mpg with a throttle body injected 350 towing. Though the new EcoBoost is making I think 450hp in the Raptor while the updated one for the F150 is still 365hp and 440lb/ft at 2500rpm. Mind you the 3.5 was the replacement for the 5.4L 3 valve. I'm not a fan of any type of charging as it adds complexity and takes up space, making it harder to work on. Give me a 5.0 Coyote any day of the week.

No, and anyone who say's their Cummins blah blah blah get's 30 mpg is full of it.

I've owned diesels when towing was part of me making a living, they all got around 12-14 mpg towing around 10,000 lbs.

My past two trucks have been gas, simply because people think their 290,000 Powerjoke with rust holes everywhere is worth 10k, and I do not tow as part of making a living anymore. Nowadays my load is maybe 8,000 lbs, and the truck sits more than it runs, hence my own big block powered truck.

I won't be buying any more new trucks, I can't justify it for something that sit's 26 day's a month.

Only Cummins I know of that can get 30mpg is the rare and HIGHLY sought after 4bt with the Bosch VE rotary pump. It can get 30mpg in a Ranger or S10. But any flavor of the 12 valve 5.9 or the 24 valves 21mpg is on a good day. I'd love to get one but good luck finding one reasonably priced.

Actually I wouldn't mind getting a Titan CD with the new 5.0 Cummins just to say I have one. I don't tow much except a 1980 Terry 440cm fiberglass bass boat. Still I like diesels, just hate how much they are being choked.

I had a 5.9 P-Pump and a 6.7 CR and neither got over 15 loaded, ever. But these were in 3/4 ton trucks. I won't buy a small truck, I work my trucks, if I want to save fuel I park them and drive something else.

Pre, it was an 07 I bought after Ford bought my 6.0 lemon (literally lemon lawed lol) back.

Don't blame you. I mean it is possible to make the 6.0L reliable but it's not worth it anymore.

It wasn't up to me, the 3 warranty claim for the same issue in 6 month's meant they had to. I mean, Ford did everything. Cut me a check for my down payment, paid off my loan, and Ford Motor Credit offered financing on the truck of my choice, they just wouldn't get me the basic work truck I wanted, so I went over to the Dodge dealer who had no issue letting me but a fleet vehicle lol.

No, turbo stuck, although it did go in for EGR twice also, and an oil cooler the second time the EGR was done.

Bummer. I've been looking at getting a diesel truck for a while, but I'm not sure what to get. Mostly it's for daily driving and towing that small boat. For reliability, ease of maintenance and decent fuel economy what would you recommend?

The only bummer was the money I lost everytime my brand new work truck went down lol. Ford actually initiated the buyback and everything.

The old 5.9 P-pump trucks are probably the best all around, if you can find a decent one that isn't whooped or priced ridiculously. Followed by the 7.3 trucks. Very little to go wrong on a Cummins, not much more other than the HPOP system on the 7.3 trucks.

I had an option to buy a 7.3 crew cab long bed with the ZF6 about 2 years ago but they wanted $12,000 and it had 400,000 on the clock. Finding a 12 valve might be a bit hard since the last one was a 1998, maybe if I'm lucky.

Exactly why I have a gas truck for working now lol. I may get 8 mpg loaded, but I only haul once a month or so lol. So all that money I saved on purchasing can buy a lot of fuel.

Right now my F150 is getting less than 8mpg because of crap injectors, crap coils, cracked exhaust manifolds, and has 276,000 miles on it. I don't mind diesel being 20 cents per gallon more, least I'll be getting better than 8mpg.

Oh, I don't mind the cost of diesel fuel, I mind the cost of a used diesel truck lol.

My 1,400 454 2500 GMC vs. a 7500 diesel in decent shape, that price difference buys lots of gas lol. But I don't DD my truck, so that makes a difference. As a matter of fact, my trucks don't move without at least a trailer hooked to them.

Yeah the up cost of a diesel truck is what's getting me too. I mean even an old 6.2 or 6.5idi is expensive, let alone a direct injected Cummins or PowerStroke. I'll bet the old IH 6.9 and 7.3idi from the late 80s in Fords are still pricy.

The IDI Fords are fairly affordable around me actually, i bought a whole truck as a drivetrain donor for my 75 for 1300 bucks, but it looked like ****.

Yeah I cannot find any diesels around here that easily. There was possibly a 24 valve for sale a couple weeks ago with a Western plow and stake bed, bit never saw the cost of it or anything.
