Basic engine rebuild, that thing is mint. I would spend $1500 and enjoy for next 20 years...we rode the hell out of my friends back in 1980 in Sierra Vista AZ.....

These have a cult following; if he didn't want to fix it, he might get between $500-$800 as-is if the rest of it looks
as good as the engine area.

You planning on compressing the rings and just sliding another jug over the piston? Hopefully that's a brand new jug, head, valvetrain, etc.
For the cost of a gasket set there's no way in life I wouldn't split that case and go through it at least to ascertain it's okay.

What he said. Then lap the valves on their seats before putting that head back on. Then check if pushrods are perfectly true. Then set valve lash and see if compression's gotten any better.

...had a broken Reed on my boat engine,

guy I bought it from said his mechanic said It needed to lap the valves...I and bought it anyways....figured $200 for reeds TRUMPS a free/new engine.....
