Welp i have been thuroughly enjoying my 5hp flathead on my streaker but it smokes badly now and i keep having to fill it up since i put it back together. And i took it apart to makesure the carbon build up isnt as bad as the spark plug was but the piston was covered in oil a bolt was seeping some through the head and the headgasket was covered in oil is my block screwed or do i just need piston rings or my intake valve checked (it spins freely when pushed up)

It's probably the cylinder. Even if it isn't scored(unlikely), it's probably worn way out of spec. NEw rings might help though.

You may have put the rings in upside down, they're tapered like this \ / to hold compression in the cylinder. When they're installed upside down compression will blow the gap open and allow oil through, MOST rings have a dot stamped on the flat edge to indicate UP. I'd hone the cylinder, install new rings and a head gasket myself.

The issue is the motor has never been all the way apart i had the side cover off and tore all of the other bits apart on the motor i even had the valves out to make sure everything was sealing nicely. But i dont have a hone money or a ring compressor

Used but never taken apart other than outer stuff it still had all of the inside components in perfect shape. I love my briggs i dont even care about predators i havent even touched my brand new hemi. But now i have two flathead briggs that need rebuilt so i guess its time for a new block i suppose

Ok we know that you have not taken the motor apart, but how do you know that anyone else has not opened the motor up since it was new? Before you got it.

The gasket was in perfect condition when i opened it up and nobody has been inside the engine. but again the motor sat for about a year outside with no protection and part time with no spark plug but when i removed the govenor and did everything i did to the motor it was looking almost perfect. It ran amazing for a while then went downhill fast. I drove it yesterday and it still smoked but thicker slicker oil seemed to help a bit even though it still smoked.

? I'm not sure but maybe the rings got messed up from sitting in the open with no plug in to keep the rain or snow out? I'm guessing the rings just went bad.

Like pearl111 said, moisture might have messed with it. Could have stuck one or more of the rings, allowing for it to have compression to run, but not control the oil.

did you check for slop on the valve guides? you could be sucking oil around the valve stem into the cylinder.. also trying putting the piston at tdc and see if you can rock it side to side.
