That twin can be converted to horizontal shaft with relative ease, and OEM parts from Jack's Small Engines.

Just FYI.

Oil dippers - Briggs and Stratton # 691733
Horizontal shaft oil sump - Briggs and Stratton # 393559

The oil sump bolts on in place of the blank side cover, which will be the new bottom.

Should work on all 16 and 18hp models, possibly others. The oil sump might take some digging to find one. I doubt if Jack's has them now that I think about it. Quite outdated.

You can hunt down a horizontal shaft crankcase cover (previously the bottom, now the side) to replace the one with the mounting flange, but it's not necessary.

There's a thread around here somewhere on it... I think Karl did the write-up.

Jeepers, that neon green flathead is really somethin'!
It's ironic, since you've often said how it's been hard for you to find a Briggs!
