I have built a kart with 13hp harbor freight engine. I currently have a 30 series tav2 converter on it. I realize now that it is not able to handle the torque. I am going to replace it with 40 series set up. My question is: Does the driven member have to be mounted with the spring inward and why?

It is best to be mounted inward. Why? Because it's a symmetric belt and the drive sheave moves toward the engine when engaging. The driven sheave should also move in the same direction as the drive sheave to reduce side load/torsional stress on the belt. (That's just my guess I really don't think it matters that much).

You can get a 40 series with a yellow spring and run it the same way you would on a 30 series with the proper symmetrical belt. A red spring will allow it to run with the spring inward. If you replace the spring, you must so preload it so the cam rests on the correct side of the wear tabs based on driven orientation/spring color

Thanks. Thats what i kinda figured. In your opinion do you think mounting outward like a 30 series will affect the overall strength of the torque converter.

the 2 fixed sides of the clutch driving and driven members must stay on the same side of the belt or as it engages the belt track will run offside or lopsided giving uneven wear and premature failure of the belt buck
