Well depends on how fast you are going. Those brakes are usually much more powerful than the tires grip. If you just want pure bloody fast acceleration with a low gear ratio and incredibly sticky tires, the stock brakes should stop no problem. Consider hydraulic brake kit too. Just remember you are limited by your tire's grip, not your brake limit. Also note that when you are going 40-60mph and you try to stop, you can get those brake calipers to put out a lot of stopping power with a little something called ADRENALINE. It's power brakes for your go kart

The goal is to eventually go pretty fast, maybe see 70mph. We need to work out all the kinks before we get there.

I hear you, I just don't have a lot of faith in the drum and band brake setup.

Thank you!

Oh its a band brake? No no no that will never stop you. You gotta go to mechanical disc brakes. I'd say maybe go to hydraulic but that would be easily 300$ vs maybe 50$ for mechanical and the kart is maybe 250 so it should be fine. Its not like a two seater Manco Deuce where its like 6-700 lbs without people.

That's what I was thinking. I'd like to find a motorcycle rear caliper and master cylinder if I can. It would probably be more than we need. I'll see what I can find. Thank you!

That's the one I use on my Manco Dingo and it locks those back tires up like it's no one's business. And it is set on the highest mechanical advantage(easiest to push, little braking power). Set that puppy up for ADRENALINE MASHING COCAINE SMASHING BRAKING POWER and your *** will be dragged to a halt in no time.

(Though in super hard mode, work your ankle muscles, you'll need them, also figure out if you need all the power and if a weaker mode would work. If need be, you could make a handbrake and use the mechanical advantage of your arm instead your ankle.)

Have fun setting it up
(It's very easy for adjustment, just make sure to check it regularly as there is no automatic adjustment.)

I think cars and cameras uses that on most of their projects, I don't remember them using hydraulics on the mower and that thing slowed down from 65mph w/ no issue so my guess is "IT'L BE FINE"

I appreciate the help!

I called Go Power Sports to ask them about the brake kit, and explained what I was building. He said they built something similar a number of years ago with a 20hp v-twin and the mechanical brakes didn't do it justice. They ended up going with trailer brakes at the time. He suggested I look into hydraulic brakes. He also said that he's never heard of anyone putting one of these on a go kart. Could we be the first ones? I find it hard to believe.

What would be wrong with buying a used rear caliper and master cylinder off of a motorcycle? There are a lot of used sets on ebay. We can make the rotor, and brackets.

I found a rear brake set off of a 2010 Honda CBR600RR with master cylinder & caliper for $25 + FS!

We'll start here, we can always upgrade.

Our "cheap" brake setup came in today. Everything is here, and seems to be in good working order!

Just need to find a new rotor and machine the hub.

I feel like disc and rotor are one in the same, but yes a disc.

Thanks for the input.

Installed new clutch springs and shoes. We also made an adapter. Originally it would of had something similar, but since you can't find a lot of parts for this clutch we had to make it. The only thing we need now is a thrust bearing.

something tells me that may be a bit much in the power department.
