2017 - Entry #2 - Twin Karts

Ok, time to put you all out of your misery...

Before anyone asks, yes, I am still building these, I've just been a bit distracted with other things the past few weeks; here's some (slow) progress...

The other kart is at almost the same point but, I forgot to shape the spindle brackets before welding them on so, now I have to do them with the angle grinder, then the steering can go together...

Quick update: 1.6mm aluminium diamond plate floor panels are in set on corner gussets; the rear section will hold batteries, controller & all other electrics under a sheet metal cover...

On a side note, I went to a local foam & rubber distributor to buy foam for the seats, they wanted $75 PER SQUARE METRE for high density foam

Awesome job as usual Tony! Maybe you can find an old couch/chair/etc at the local tip and get some foam out of them?

When I say "local" I mean here in Australia; I looked online at a few other suppliers & prices were much cheaper but, once they added shipping, it got a bit ridiculous again...

That's when I remembered the upholsterer here in town; went & saw him & had 4 pieces cut to size for $15

A long, long time ago (about 3 years) in a land far, far away (about 600 miles), I lost the shaft nut off one of the motors I'm using; a few days ago, I went all over town trying to find a replacement M8 left hand thread nut, without success...

Then it dawned on me, I can make one now

Oh, did I forget to mention? I recently upgraded my lathe for a new lathe mill combo, allowing for a whole new realm of machining capabilities...

I also made & tacked on brake caliper mounting brackets with the help of another new toy, a horizontal bandsaw which doubles as a vertical bandsaw...

Seats:
- Acquire Foam
- Acquire T nuts
- Cut 3/8" 3 ply to size & shape
- Cut, drill & weld in corner mounting brackets
- Drill ply for T nuts to match brackets
- Screw together...

Now to lacquer the ply & cover...

I made battery clamps (as seen in pic #1) with the help of yet another new purchase, a 3 in 1 sheet metal shear, brake & roller...

Pedals made & mounted; just need to dress the welds & paint...

Speaking of pedals, I deliberated over which accelerator to use; I looked at the pedals available & didn't really like the way they looked or worked so, I went for a cable activated thumb throttle...

The thumb throttle is mounted to a pedestal & is pulled by a cable until it hits a stop (note the hole in the thumb pad); the beauty of this setup is I can control the speed of the karts simply by turning the thumb throttle towards the stop...

These are moving along but, the planets haven't aligned for me to post anything as yet; I have a vid to upload but, it's just not working; gimme a day or two...

As of now, the karts are painted & almost fully assembled with the following exclusions:

Pink Kart still needs:
- Drive wheel hub fully welded
- Assemble & fit drive wheel
- Finish electrics
- Fit brake switch
- Make & fit rear cover
- Trim Axles

Green kart still needs:
- Cover & fit seat
- Fit brake switch
- Make & fit rear cover
- Trim Axles

I'm not too happy with the paint job on the green kart but, at this point, I don't have time to strip & respray it...

Well, #1 seems to be a roaring success. I had to adjust the speed after his initial run as it was still a bit fast for him; being electric, that was a simple operation; I will increase speed as he gets used to it...

No, seriously, they've been upgraded & I plan to go further in the near future...

Moving right along, so far, my granddaughter is a "no show" & I'm heading away for the weekend so, for the purposes of qualifying, I had my grandson ride both karts (obviously not at the same time) In a single, uncut vid, just to show they both run independently
