Well as chance would have it, I started a thread because I'm building a Spyder Cart Granddaddy and It was suggested that I join the build off. Here's my Entry. I bought all the steel from my local supplier on Monday. I've been cutting it and reviewing the plans for 2 days now. I think tomorrow, I'll do some welding. Here is my pile of steel and equipment.

OK, I spent a couple hours welding the main frame today. I have come to the conclusion that I need a welding table badly!!

It's close. I used clamps and magnets to level but it's not like a welding table. Today, I just sent one of my workers to pick me up a 4'X4' plate of 1/4''. I will be welding on it tonight. I'm also thinking I should have used 11 gauge instead of 14. The 11 gauge is easier to work with for me, and it's easier to correct mistakes. The last kart I built 18 years ago was 11.

Try to fix it as close as possible. You will thank yourself later. It sucks doing things twice and slowing down to take the time to twist it straight. But like ANYTHING this is the foundation. and you need a good foundation to build on.
I am not bragging, I have just had the same problem before, and this time I am fixing things right while I can. and better learning how in the First place! LOL
But hey nice work! It looks pretty good.

Thanks, I got my 1/4'' plate installed for a table this afternoon. It will be much better. I do understand about getting it right. Like you said, it's the foundation. If it starts bad, the whole project will be bad. Some of my stuff started coming in today.

OK, I started over with 11 gauge steel and a large piece of 1/4'' plate to use as a welding table. I'm glad I did because everything is right on the money. Should be getting more parts on Monday. I'm shooting for getting the roll cage and sub frame built over the weekend.

Got the main frame welded together today. I've cut the roll bar also, but I think I'll start the suspension block first. Got to cut grass at my place in the country (5 acres) so I won't have as much time tomorrow.

A question for the gurus. On my A arms, I'm using 1'' O.D. pipe. I need some type of bushing between the bolt and pipe. Any recommendations? Nylon? Grease fitting? Source to buy them?

I didn't get much done this weekend, I had honey do's. My Chicago Electric chop saw finally started going out on me. I bought a new Ridged this weekend. I was on the fence between the Dewalt and Ridged. I like the miter gauge much better on the Ridged, and it has a lifetime warranty. As far as tools, I love shopping for them. I'm like my wife in a shoe store.

I thought it worth mentioning, Husky makes a digital angle finder that is great. I found the key to really close cuts is the use the angle gauge to set the miter with the blade. It has worked great for me. On the plans I bought, I have found a few mistakes that have cost me time and steel. In one of these pics, you can see on the front of the frame where the suspension block welds, the 45 angle is just left open. I am going to find a solution for that. It looks terrible and it leaves sharp edges.

I picked up[ my engine this weekend also. FYI, Harbor Freight 20% off coupons don't apply to the Predator engines. I know at one time they did.

I ordered my torque converter to fit this engine. It sates up to 16HP with 1'' bore. Anyone got experience with this one? http://www.gopowersports.com/40-series-torque-converter-kit-bolt-on/

Yeah...I work more with wood...so I would cut scrap until I got the angles perfect...then set the blade to one.

I'm thinking a little bit of 14 guage plate welded over those 45° cuts then radius and smooth the edges. (Might have to cut a little more off..though..But, with a short 45° piece clamped top and bottom for a guide, and an angle grinder...should be doable.)

Is that 45 even require a precision angle anyway?

Yea, that's what I'm thinking also. Not sure why it was on the plans. I checked the photos of the finished Kart and sure enough it showed them being open. I looked at the photos of the one that a guy named Jesse did and he cut the angle oppsite and welded a piece in to weld the suspension block straight to it.
